Hi Guys,

I was going to post this a couple hours ago, but I got engrossed with reading the threads on this forum. It's addictive.

Anyway, it's also 5:00 am and I need to sleep. So I'll ask my question and be brief about since I think my eyes are actually already closed.

I picked up a Compaq DL320 server from RackShack. I also went and popped the bucks for the full 10Mbs Cogent connection. Now, do you think there's a fair chance I could actually profitably use up the bandwidth I'm alloted with normal virtual hosting accounts?

That's all. Time for sleep. Yea!

Thanks,

Brian

Depends on what are you going to put on your Compaq. But still if you'll get 8-10 mbps usage of all given then your Compaq will die.

I'm a bit lost as well. I thought maybe he was speaking of the bandwidth included, but that would be aproximately 1Mbs, not 1gbps.

No, they are connected to a 100mbps port, and if you were to actually burst up to a full 1gbps you would be using a lot more than 400GB, but it's impossible because your server would not have a fat enough pipe.

So is the word that the bandwidth is a bit of a waste of money unless I'm using at least 4Mbps of bandwidth? The reason I got this one was because, in addition to Virtual Hosting customers, I will also be placing my free hosting customers on the server and using the cheap bandwidth. My free hosting cutomers have virtually no features, besides limited SSI, so at least they won't be using much server resources.
