View Full Version : How much would this server handle?

How much bandwidth could this server handle:
800Ghz Duron
64MB RAM

I'm saying it could push 3-4mbps tops, but does anyone else have comments on that?

I would say it depends on what you are pushing through. Static HTML or database driven (high server load stuff) etc. ?

That would probably be through static HTML. How much you think if it was database driven?

800Ghz Duron

holy crap! Now thats some CPU speed.......

Anyways, I'm pretty sure you mean 800MHz, but I would put some more ram in there if it only has 64MB... 512 would be good, but if it is just for home/network use 256 would be ok...

Anything more than static HTML, I'd put some more ram in it...

Just my 2 cents :)

A pentium 166 would work fine for you, go with what you want to get, static HTML is not intensive, and even cgi would run goo don a 166mhz, people today are just unreasonable.

They do not seem to understand you wil be maxing your bandwidth allocation with almost any computer if you have it configured right.

I know of many Pentium 100's that do 1GB transfer a day without breaking a sweat, and only have 32MB ram.

1 Gig a day is nothing =) That server should be able to do 1 gig in 2 minutes. Anyways, I am sure it could easy pull 10-15 Mb per second but ram is important cause swapping sucks.

Hey, I know one gig a day is nothing, but it was maxing the lil line it was on, nothing high speed, but fine for the static content none-the-less. And one gig a day of pure static content is quite a bit.

I'm so used to typing "Ghz".

amd_duron,
Where would I find a Pentium 166????

Your joking right? Why would you want a 166 Mhz?

mas3000, im not joking a 166 would handle it, I was just using that as an analogy. I don't yet offer 166's but I hope too soon, I doubt people will gript for $20-$40 a month. :)

I know of no place to get a 166 for any reasonable price.

amd_duron,
So where would you get a Pentium 166??

A dedicated for $20-40 per dedicated server sounds nice but what about rackspace? It's not cheap unless your planning to host in your basement.

Yeah, it's at cheapest $10 per U unless you own your own datacenter. And then for the bandwidth... How would you stay in business off of $20-$40/month?

Well, low bandwidth, for DNS servers or something, like 2-6GB max, would make good DNS.

Also good low volume storage, could expand the price with more bandwidth, or maybe offer clusters of computers for more bandwidth.

I see.:)

But where would you find a Pentium 166????

Oh, I forgot to mention, I live, and have my business out in the boonies. It is a big disadvantage for bandwidth, but a real plus for space, and expense of products.

Everywhere, used server, brand new never sold server, some old desktop PCs. And supplies for them are also everywhere.

Personally I have a stash of over 35 Pentium 166+ computers.
Some as much as 375Mhz.

I don't buy anything at ebay, most of it is crap.

This is my last post here, why continue this discussion?

I took it mas3000 was just joking around, maybe not, regardless I doubt you can find a place to host it for a reasonable price anyway.

(see it was my last post, I just edited this one to reply to you!)

Thanks ClusterMania. I was looking at EBay before too.

Monte,
Were did you get it for $50?

some guy had it for sale imagine my surprise when I got it home and found out it had 2, 2gig drives in it. I bought it thinking it only had one.:D

So for $70.00 I have a pretty decent development platform for testing scripts and playing with configs and stuff.
