View Full Version : A safe place to register a domain?
DeathRaven 10-05-2006, 11:00 PM I would like to just have a safe places to register domains. I registered my 1st site with networksolutions but are there cheaper and still 100% and safe other options? I read these forums and read storied about godaddy stealing(parking) addresses only if you whois them?
As I understand it who you register with does not matter so just someone suggest one please.
Cirtex 10-05-2006, 11:36 PM Hi,
Godaddy should be fine and they do not steal your domain , just point your domain to a hosting company and you should be fine, also check out registerfly, namecheap and enom.
Good luck
DeathRaven 10-05-2006, 11:59 PM TY :) I have been looking at ipower.com
Are they fine?
Seems very cheap at only 6.50 a year. But if it makes 100% no diff that cool!
Siropel 10-06-2006, 12:24 AM Always get your domain from a different company than your host.
This beying said ... I recommend namecheap.com - registerfly.com - godaddy.com for domain names.
hmalekib 10-06-2006, 12:27 AM enom.com is also good =)
ldcdc 10-06-2006, 12:37 AM Thread moved to Domain Name Forum.
healthy 10-06-2006, 12:39 AM I highly recommend IPOWER.COM:
-they are the more unexpensive
-they used to charge you evenless; about two months ago they charged like 4.50 or something per domain registration
-you are the owner of the domain
-privacy protection included
-DNS total control
-good support
I registered all my domains there: its very cool!
and no, am not part of their team, actually I registered at IPOWER.COM BUT:
I host my pages at JAGUARPC.COM
.
.
.
Although I must say am a newbie too!
.
eddy2099 10-06-2006, 12:40 AM If you are looking for a basic service, you can take a look at domainsite.com , they are going for $6.99/yr per domain.
healthy 10-06-2006, 12:43 AM Oh , yes, at namecheap.com you can not update your data whilst at IPOWER.COM you can do that, I registred one single domain at namecheap, too!
DeathRaven 10-06-2006, 12:52 AM OK then Ipower it is then! :)
DeathRaven 10-06-2006, 02:06 AM Hmmm after spending even longer looking on these forums it seems ipower have terrible support if anything ever goes wrong with payment moving ect.
Anyone ever have problems with these things?
What don't you like about Networksolutions? Their prices? But they charge 6,99, and, though you can find some threads claiming they're not so good, but they're better then Ipower.
If you're looking for cheap solutions, you might look at this domainmonger.com, dotster.com, Nameit.net.j, umpdomain.com.
Wish you good luck in finding the best registrar!

This leaves me breathless... I always thought NetSol is the company which still is charging $35.00... :)
Do you know any secret way to get $6.99 pricing level there? Please *PLEASE* let us know!!! Thank you!
To answer OP's question... The most secure registrar, for many years already, is Moniker (http://moniker.com).
Avoid Ipower, GoDaddy, RegisterFly, Yahoo and the likes AT ALL COSTS. I can't stress that strong enough... Of these, Ipower and Yahoo aren't even registrars, but the resellers only. Ipower, BTW still is registering domains *manually* meaning there will be at least some time (some report few hours, some - upto few DAYS, some say their domain wasn't registered at all !) between your order and domain(s) being registered. That time could be crucial for your business, if the domain you've ordered will be registered by the other party.
You might want also consider (in no particular order):
- NameCheap;
- eNom;
- Stargate;
- DomainSite (I am not so sure about their security anymore, however, taking into account last month's events);
Good luck!
BountyHunter1 10-15-2006, 10:09 PM Omnis.com and aplus.net are two companies with excellent security when you have issues dealing with security and protection.
Quite frankly, ignore every else's advice. If you want SAFE. The ONLY place to register your domains is at MONIKER.
Stan Marsh 10-15-2006, 11:38 PM The ONLY place to register your domains is at MONIKER.
And Network Solutions. ;)
I can't ever recommend NS since they lost my prized (personal) domain under their previous renewal policies when they were a monopoly.
Dave Zan 10-16-2006, 09:42 PM I can't recommend netsol either for various reasons, especially since I've found a
couple of registrars better than netsol can ever hope to be.
meanpc 10-17-2006, 04:38 AM I've been using GoDaddy for about 4 years now and currently have 30 domains there. I've yet to have the first problem and the few times I've had to call support, I've gotten someone on the phone within 5 minutes. DNS changes have always been quick, as well as transfers. Oh yeh, their prices are cheap too.
I've seen a few people advise against GoDaddy, but I haven't seen any concrete reasons why in this thread. I know there will be the isolated incident with any company. I want to hear the problems, because I know quite a few people with GoDaddy, and they all love them.
I do not resell for godaddy or work for them. I'm just a satisfied customer.

Here you go (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=523012)...
This is one incident only, but it shows rather stupid rules enforced in practice.
Dave Zan 10-17-2006, 09:27 AM Quoting a post I made on a similar question in another forum:
Well, they can charge you: a) $9.95 if you get an invalid WHOIS report and
you don't update the WHOIS data on time, b) $29 if they get a legal inquiry
for the domain (especially if it's for UDRP), c) $50 if your domain gets a spam
complaint and you opt to transfer out, or d) $199 if letter c happens, but the
domain gets suspended if not responded to on time, and you wish to have it
reactivated.
I got those answers from various people who posted specifics.
TopFint 10-18-2006, 12:12 PM do not recommend ipower, as renewals cost $9.95/year per domain
I'm going with domainsite, the best company I've ever seen. Fast support by phone, secure domain managemet system first year 6.99, renewals - $7.99
Stan Marsh 10-18-2006, 01:25 PM do not recommend ipower, as renewals cost $9.95/year per domain
I do not recommend iPower too, but reasons are quite different:
- they are resellers only;
- they still are registering domains manually (!!!);
- their main business is hosting (and my main credo in domaining is not buy domains from hosting companies and vice versa);
- have heard numerous complains about poor or no support.
meanpc 10-19-2006, 08:12 PM I hadn't heard all that stuff about GoDaddy.

You know...I hate to say it...but maybe these charges aren't so bad, provided there's some warning. What better way is there to combat spammers, child pornographers, etc.? I wouldn't feel that way if I hosted someone and got hit with one of those charges without fair warning though. :)
psx23.com 10-19-2006, 08:51 PM I have never had a problem with godaddy.
DONT use registerfly - my advice !
I have been unable to renew domains with them for 6 days now and keep getting the same response that "There is found to be issue with renewal interface at registry. Please submit renewal order after X hours." and it continues and continues and continues.
...and no... they are not expired doms.... or in redemption or grace period or anything like that...
Also, I have lost domains with them because some expiry dates listed for some of my doms were listed INCORRECTLY within the regsiterfly user interface... and its only when u realise that u cant admin a dom and u check the whois records that u realise that the registerfly interface was displaying incorrect data !
I complained time and time again that something was screwy with the dates but they ignored me...
Have also renewed doms within grace period, been charged and received email confirmation of such, then weeks later I have gone to administer the site and cant find it (cause they didnt actually renew it).
After weeks of whinging i was finally refunded, but the point is that i had to complain and complain to even get a refund.
Ive read other horror stories about them, and I dont know if they are true, but after my experiences, I reckon they probably are ...
Hope someone from registerfly reads this... SUE ME FOR TELLING THE TRUTH ?
Its a true story... this note will never be removed from this site because its true and I cannot be sued or anything because I SWEAR TO GOD WHAT I AM SAYING IS THE TRUTH !!!!
keywolf 10-25-2006, 07:13 AM Namecheap.com
Not a problem with them its quick and easy
...and no... they are not expired doms.... or in redemption or grace period or anything like that...
Sadly, they will be soon :(
