The new WHT rules, or at least they should be :D:

I used to think Eric Raymond was unnecessarily obnoxious, but as I get older I am changing my mind :D.

You know, in a perfect world RTFM would be an appropriate answer...

Its a brilliant piece. I've pointed innumerable people to it since becoming aware of it, usually it just stops the conversation. ;)

Most times that's exactly the desirable outcome LOL !

But I don't really mind that people just ask the easily-answered question instead of doing the web search. The crotchety one is... well, you know... someone else in this thread.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I think some of the people who don't follow the guidelines in this piece would never have found this thread to read it.

I was going to post the same link as uuallan did at the top but figured I'd see if it had been posted recently first (attempting to follow my own advice ;) ).

I've just noticed that people are constantly asking questions in this forum that it takes 30 seconds to google, go to the homepage of the software in question, or search WHT to find the answer for and wanted to give them some guidelines as to why they sometimes don't get the answers they're looking for.

Please read the link above!

are you saying that you are becoming unnecessarily obnoxious as you get older ?

sorry, no offence intended .. I said something similar the other day and got that response from a friend
(should I say 'former friend')

Unfortunately, I am finding that to be the case :D. I find myself doing things that I used to hate when older people did it :).

Complaining about overly loud music...voting ultraconservative...taking your teeth out in public... :D

(Just kidding - I'm hardly one to talk. In a few years I'll be out of the networks' beloved target demographic!)

Fortunately, the answer is a qualified no to all three :D. I have, however, found myself saying, "I can't believe that kids today call this crap music" :D. Then I remember that in my day we grooved to Milli Vanilli and M.C. Hammer and all I can do is hang my head in shame :puke:

I've been watching the "I Love the 80s" series on VH-1 and alternating between laughing myself silly and questioning my sanity.

No matter how bad today's youth may be...in our own sweet tyrannical way, we were just as bad.

Who here had, or ever contemplated having, a Flock-of-Seagulls hairdo? *snert*
