I did try to search for the answer to this before posting. Sorry if this has been asked a million times or is a stupid question. Thanks in advance for the help.


I am currently getting a vps setup and moving my site over there soon. What I would like to know is can I just use godaddy's dns servers and point to my IP in my godaddy control panel or is this going to cause problems.

The reason I would like to do this is because I am not sure what server solution I will end up permantly using. I don't know anything about setting up dns servers. I was thinking that if I moved around in the next few months to try out new hosts it would be easier to log into my godaddy account and just point the domain to the new ip address without having to have everything propagate to new dns servers?

Hopefully this makes sense as I don't know all the correct termanology.

Is this something that's going to work or is it not a good idea?

I think that your main concern should be:

I don't know anything about setting up dns servers.

What about (at least) the basic security? Are you feeling OK about using Linux shell? Configuring daemons and services?

Shorter: will you be able to run your VPS properly or will all kiddie hackers and spammers have one more honeypot to play with?

To answer your question: yes, GD DNS are OK to use with any setup, incl. VPS.

It's a managed vps. I was advised to go this route due to the fact that I don't know much about running a server. They offered to setup the dns services for me on my server, but it just seemed like it would be easier to to log into godaddy and change where the domain points too if I changed hosts rather than waiting for everything to propagate again.

I'm going to keep my shared hosting account for a month or two to make sure everything goes smoothly with the vps as well. That way if the server did get hacked or something I could log into go daddy and point the domain back over to my shared account.

Managed and managed are two different things - each company understands this word differently. If they will only 'setup' your VPS - it's clearly NOT enough. It needs to be secured all the way from the first seconds being online. If they will not do this and will not apply any patches/updates to your VPS, it could end quite badly...

Anyway, I can't imagine a VPS w/o it's own DNS...
