What are the general opinions about Cogent and Qwest. I've read bits and bops on this site regarding Cogent, but nothing on Qwest.

Any information would be helpfull.

In my experience Qwest are good. I've never seen many issues that were related to their service. My bugbears have always been Cogent and AT&T. Tracerouting an issue usually ends up in either of their laps.

From what I can tell and have been told, cogent is crap, and from what I understand Qwest is very reliable

Ok, im asking because im moving to a new reseller, who runs both 100mbit cogent and qwest.

Why would a provider do this, is their a reason and would it effect me directly.

So you've heard that Cogent is crap, and you are saying it costs $0.10/gb for bandwidth ? Don't know who provided this information to you, but it's not true. Cogent isn't the best, there are a lot better providers, but they are more expensive. Cogent is quite cheap, and for the money they deliver quite a good connection.

It's a choice you have to make. Either premium, quality bandwidth such as Level3, or 'cheap' bandwidth like Cogent. I'm using Cogent on one of my servers, and I'm very happy with their performance so far.

We have had servers on Qwest's network and been happy with them. I was considering a datacenter in my area with Cogent and although they come right into my city the traceroutes I have done bounce me all over the US. Still thinking about Cogent in the future though.

Cogent 100Mbps for $100 Moenth
100Mbps x (60secx60minx24) x 30 days average month.
8640000/Meg to Gig
8640Gig a month bandwith for $1000...

Thats 8.64GB for $1...

Im sorry, I was a whole cent off... .11/gig

Interestingly I moved my main domain from a datacenter which runs Quest to RackShack where the outgoing bandwidth is largely Cogent. While on the Quest bandwidth I had a friend in Europe who had a problem over their DSL line where images on my site would appear broken due to sone kind of timeout. I was never able to solve that problem but the day after I moved to cogent bandwidth he emailed to say that the images were finally loading for him.

This is probably off topic, but I found it interesting since people say cogent stinks to Europe that my probelm was actually solved by switching from Quest to Cogent.

Im sorry, I was a whole cent off... .11/gig That's assuming that you were using 100% capacity of your uplink for the entire month. If you were at 100% capacity, I suspect that your performance would be qite bad, even for Cogent. Nevertheless, it's still cheap relative to a 100MBPS uplink to any other provider.

Cogents theory is to makeup for lost quality with massive cheapbandwith
