I had a 1gb remote storage space signed up with them and
it has either been very slow or inaccessible for the past couple
of weeks since I signed up with them.

Petr managed something about wanting to add a new pipe a few days back which should improve performance but I still cannot get to my space.

I did consider signing up for dedicated hosting if it improves the situation but since the problem is not just isolated to me. I would just drop that idea.

... was Cogent and not them. I monitored it with VisualRoute all the time, there were packet losses all over Cogent hops on that route... not FDC's fault

Seems like FDCServer is up but my space there is still down.

I didn't figure with the location Petr described not having a multihomed connection would be as much a problem as it has been.

I'm trying to run a high-availability server, so its a darn good thing that this isn't happening when its fully configured. Of course I'm losing a good day of work here, as the box has been down consistantly lately. :(

Just wondering what everyones experiences with them have been like up until this. Its hard for me to provide any kind of an uptime guareentee, when its completely out of my control.

Well, the first week or two everything went well. My server was down yesterday (power supply problems, apparently) for 3 hours.

Tonight it's been down for 2 hours, more or less, so far.

It is hard to do anything in these conditions...

And now (but that's not fdc-related), with the strike going on @ our cable service provider here, my link to the internet could go down anytime... :( But at least, that would just be me and not the people who rely on me for hosting (only friends & family so far, thank god!)

I haven't been able to access any sites hosted on FDCservers.net (nor FDCservers.net itself) for the past hour or two.

EDIT: I can get to FDCServers.net now, although it's really slow. I still can't get to other sites hosted on other FDCServers' servers.

Maybe we can petition for a backup provider for when Cogent goes down. It's been great for months on end and now suddenly Cogent is up and down like a jojo... I'm gonna send Petr an email and try to find out as much as I can, but one thing is clear, things can't go on like this.

I can't really consider moving shop, I spent far too much upgrading the server hardware to do that and Petr/fdcservers have been to nice to me just to0 do that anyway.

While petitioning for another backup provider is good, I don't think it is cost-effective for fdcservers to do that. If you look at your current pricing for server, that is really low, plus the fact that you are not just getting fixed amount of transfer, but unmetered ports. Even if Petr can manage to get a backup, it will be slow.

Well, that's not exactly what I had in mind. I have suggested in an email to Petr to maybe offer a backup line for when Cogent goes down to people who request it and then charge those people an extra fee for the comfort.

I know he can't offer backup at the current pricing, but maybe for a limited amount of people and at extra charge it will be something to think about.

He did once say they already have 6 additional fibre carriers in the building, so I should imagine getting a backup hooked up wouldn't be too much of an effort...

A: No, there never have been any outages except scheduled maitnance. Cogent is peered from 3 different backbones here in Chicago if one connection fails another kicks in so they really can not go down.

If they were using another provider, adding Cogent would be a nice backup line. Going the other way around seems harder.

Wouldn't he have to charge significantly more? ... I'll leave that to Petr to evaluate. I have no idea what the involved cost would be. I just offered it as food for thought.

They've been down and unreliable for a while now and it's useless to send 'em an email since their whole network is down and they won't receive it until it comes back up.

I have a server with them and I wasn't expecting high availability, it's not really possible at such a low price.

Sorry to hear you have a bad experience with them. My experience with them has been excellent. This is probably the first downtime I've had in the past 2 months with close to none before that. The connection my server is on has always been reliable and fast as hell. I was transferring some linux rpm's from Redhat to my server the other week at 8 mb/s...

Between the email flood recently (?) and yesterday's DOS attack, it sure seems like someone's out to get them.
