For $35/year, they better be pretty interesting. CC 02-04-2001, 11:10 PM Two things look interesting, the 1st is they have a $10 transfer for existing domains. The second is (if I am reading it right) for $35 it looks like you get a free home page (though no mention of storage or usage) an email ID and domain pointing. Web Address (e.g., http://www.widgetdesigns.com) Home Page or Web Address Forwarding Email Account (e.g., myname@widgetdesigns.com) Online Access to Your Account Management SI-Chris 02-04-2001, 11:14 PM The "home page" might be a simple "Coming soon..." page, which most registrars give you for free. Also, with Dotster.com the transfer fee is $11.95, but that includes a year's registration. Equity 02-05-2001, 04:25 AM It's probably the same thing as Yahoo's Personal Email service at personal.mail.yahoo.com . I use it for one of my domains soley for email purposes. Basically you transfer an existing domain to Yahoo ($10 a year) or register a new domain through Yahoo ($35 a year), then you'll be able to send/receive email using your own domain address via your Yahoo email account - on the web or through POP. It's quite handy if you're just using the domain for email purposes and nothing else, since Yahoo's email is quite fast and reliable, and it comes with POP access. The hosts I use for other domains do provide pretty good web mail programs but they're somehow limiting. However, a BIG problem is that Yahoo will still attach ad tags in every email you send even though you pay for the service - I had not known that until I started using it. The Yahoo ad tag kind of defeats the whole purpose of having your own domain name as your email address to look professional. The free home page thing is just a free Geocities site to which you can redirect your domain. You can also redirect your domain to any other site. However, it is not stealth redirecting (your domain name will not show up in the address bar). Frankly that wouldn't look good for a "serious" site. On the Yahoo Domains page it does say that you can manage your domain's DNS record (MX, CNAME, etc) - that is not available in Yahoo Personal Email. Perhaps that's the only difference between the two services? Please share the experience if you've tried Yahoo Domains - I LOVE being able to use my own domain address via Yahoo email so far, but HATE the advertising tag attached and would like to have at least stealth forwarding. Wazeh 02-05-2001, 05:01 AM Beware. It seems Yahoo doesn't allow you to use other nameservers. I just helped a customer point his Yahoo domain and there is no apparent way to change nameservers. |
