View Full Version : How can I create nameservers for my client?
Hello,
I'm wondering how can I can I create nameservers for my reseller clients.
I'm using cPanel/WHM.
Thank you.
ezXEN 09-29-2006, 08:28 PM goto whm resellers --> Reseller Center --> edit privelages/nameservers
I heared that for each client I've to have 3 IP addresses in order to be able to give nameservers like: ns1.clientdomain.com & ns2.clientdomain.com.
Is that true?
linktome 09-29-2006, 11:54 PM it depends on how you setup. You can even have 1 ip for sharing, and still can setup 2 private nameservers
PremiumHost 09-30-2006, 04:34 AM You need to have 2 ips for private nameservers.
These ips can still be used for websites with dedicated ip.

You wouldn't be able to do the above, it is for users with a higher level of control you should contact your host.
midweb 09-30-2006, 08:50 AM thanks for the quick reply I'm with xilo at the moment but I see your cheaper.

Thanks.
ezXEN 09-30-2006, 07:34 PM You dont have privelages to, you must contact your host.
PremiumHost 09-30-2006, 10:31 PM If you own the dedicated server, you can assign 2 ips for 2 nameservers.
Another ip will be shared for all websites.
If you are a reseller, contact your host and ask them for nameserver ips, then point your private nameservers to these ips.
cpsitesaver.com 10-01-2006, 10:33 AM I am assuming you have your own dedicated server and have root access so you can "create nameservers for your reseller clients".
Here are the steps that I do to implement this (quite long whew ;)):
1. Once inside your root WHM, click on Reseller Center. You will normally find this under "Resellers" menu. Path is Main >> Resellers >> Reseller Center
2. You will see there the section "Add/Remove Reseller Accounts" on top of page. On the "Add Reseller Privileges" dropdown menu, find your customer's domain and click OK to make it a reseller account.
3. Then go below that same page (Reseller center) and go to section "Reseller Modifications". Choose the domain you just added to have reseller rights from the dropdown menu and once selected, click on "Edit Privileges Nameservers" button or link.
4. Inside "Reseller Modifications", you will now be able to see there several fields and checkboxes to give rights to your reseller. Never check those with "Warnings" notice unless you really are sure of what you are doing. Check only those applicable to your reseller. You can also save that setup so you have a standard setup config for your reseller.
5. Down below, there is a section there about nameserver setup. You will normally give like dns1 or ns1.youresellerdomain.com and dns2 or ns2.yourresellerdomain.com. So plug ns1.yourresellerdomain.com to Primary nameserver and ns2.yourresellerdomain.com to Secondary nameserver. Once there, click the "Assign an IP address" and "Add an A entry for this nameserver" buttons. Wait for the pop up box before clicking the other button. A pop up will appear telling you if the assignment is Ok or not. Remember the IP address assigned to each nameservers. Do this for ns2 or secondary nameserver.
6. After this is done, inform your reseller to go to his/her domain name registrar and register the nameserver and the IP you saved for it. Normally, this setup is available to the domain owner once logged in his/her domain but if this is too complicated for you, ask for help from your domain registrar. Just give them the nameserver name (ns1.xxx.com) and the matching IP address.
That's it. You should have created a nameserver. Check your nameserver setup at www.dnsreport.com (http://www.dnsreport.com) by typing the nameserver domain. If you set it up correctly, you should see no red lines there.
And if something goes wrong along the way or you are still not sure of whether to continue or not, you can post your problem here and I am sure a lot of other people here will help you.
Other webmaster here may do steps differently than I outlined above. I only knew this through research and experience yet it works for me. If I miss anything, please feel free to add anything or correct this post.
Just wanna help the newbies. :)
ezXEN 10-01-2006, 01:27 PM If you would have read rather then assume you would find out he has a reseller account and that you wasted your time stating something that was already said.

Sorry to bump an old thread- but I'm a newbie and need some tips.
Here's my situation:
I have a VPS, 2 IPs (1 shared, both used for nameservers). When I try to assign nameservers to a reseller account, it says "Sorry, you are out of ips to assign as nameservers". Is there a way to assign already-used IPs to reseller nameservers?
Thanks
cyberspace 10-12-2006, 05:28 PM Hello,
Log in your VPS via SSH as root, open the file /etc/nameserversip, there you will fine somethin like:
154.64.88.12=0
155.22.75.121=0
change the lines to:
154.64.88.12=ns1.domain.com
155.22.75.121=ns2.domain.com
then save and exit. Once it is done, you need to log in to your domain name registrar account and register the custom DNS servers. I can't say how to register the DNS exactly, however I advise you to check a FAQ page of your registrar.
Anyway, you said:
>>I have a VPS, 2 IPs (1 shared, both used for nameservers).
So I think you need to contact your hosting company and ask to provide you more IPs or enable "Allow Sharing Nameserver Ips" in WHM --> Tweak Settings. In the second case you don't need to edit the file
/etc/nameserversip
Just register the nameservers via your registrar.
One more thing, you need to add A records for the nameservers by editing the DNS enties of the appropriate domain name. It can be done via WHM too, see the section "DNS Functions"
Hope it helps.
kubel 10-12-2006, 07:41 PM cyberspace,
/etc/nameserverips already has our nameservers listed after the IPs, and "Allow Sharing Nameserver IPs" is already enabled in WHM --> Tweak Settings, but I'm still getting the message.
Any other suggestions other than purchasing more IPs?
Thanks.
PogiWeb 10-12-2006, 07:43 PM People cant read I guess but what you need to do since your just a reseller is contact your service provider and ask them kindly how much a private IP would cost and for them to set up a nameserver for you. You can run a nameserver off one IP if you wanted....

I'm on a VPS... unless you were refering to OP.
TheWorkGuy 10-12-2006, 11:36 PM Thanks for that guide, very useful.

cyberspace 10-13-2006, 02:15 AM Ok, then you don't need to assign dedicated IPs for your resellers, but you must set the custom DNS servers for each your reseller there:
WHM --> Reseller Center --> Edit Privileges/Nameservers.
Put the primary and secondary nameservers in fields:
"Primary Nameserver", "Secondary Nameserver" and click "Save".
Then edit the DNS zone of the necessary domain name add A records for the nameservers. Don't forget to register the nameservers via the registarar.
You need to repeat the steps for each reseller.
kubel 10-13-2006, 03:16 AM Alright, I'll give that a try. Thanks a lot for the help cyberspace.
