I'm planning to transfer my domain to a new registrar, which has a functioning website & emails.

How long does it take for a domain to be transfered from one registrar to another? Will emails be lost during this period if so how can one minimise this problem? or quicken the process?

Thanks for your advise.

Once you make the updates with your Registrar it could be a fast as 20 minutes, before your Domain is being pointed to the new Hoster. All new eMails will then be going there (situation normal) and if you still have access to your old Hosting account and presuming your CP is Cpanel, FTP in and download everything in the 'mail' directory -- one level above 'public_html'.

I think he's talking about registrar transfer, not host tranfers.

I don't think you will lose any emails as they'll still arrive at your same host (again assuming you doing a registrar transfer not host transfer). At most they get a bit delayed.

If you will not change DNS, your site will function 100% normally during registrar transfer. No emails and no visitors will be lost.

Let's make that 99% instead, assuming whoever's hosting the site and/or email
doesn't experience any problems while the domain registration's transferring. :D

Tornado54, it depends on how soon the transfer is communicated and approved
with the gaining and losing registrar. IIRC (I think it was Stan's), it took at least
27-28 hours, the longest can take 7-10 days.

Thanks everyone.

I'm changing registrars & would not be changing the DNS entries as the host remains the same. I'm moving from Yahoo to Namecheap.

The quickest in MY experience was .org transfer away from GoDaddy (the only thing I respect them for is quick domain release) - something around 12-13 hours...
