From everything I've read, mhz per mhz, a P3 is much better for a server than a P4. But is a 1.13 ghz P3 still better than a 1.6 ghz P4?

But is a 1.13 ghz P3 still better than a 1.6 ghz P4? ToastyX 06-14-2002, 01:03 PM MHz hardly ever makes much of a difference. I believe the Intel Pentium III 1.133 GHz (Tualatin) has twice as much cache as the Intel Pentium IV 1.6 GHz which makes much more of a difference than MHz. cabalstudios 06-14-2002, 01:19 PM ToastyX, Correct me if i'm wrong but on the Tualatins, the DUAL processors and the dual mboards have 512K Cache, the single processors come with 256K Cache, only The reason I believe this is so, is because when clients want to upgrade there Single Tualatin to a DUAL we need to buy a NEW mboard and 2 new processors with 512k cache, as you cant use the 256k cache processors on a dual config. If, I'm wrong please let me know, as it would be cheaper for our clients and for us, if we could use the same processors on a single and dual configuration. Just my 2 cents. Imran Cephren 06-14-2002, 02:50 PM Pentium 4's under 1.8 ghz ghz are crappy. But the rereleased Pentium 4 Northwood processors are really good in performance. I the PIII 1.13 can be overclocked to the speed of a P4 1.4 But if you are running smp with 2 1.13 processors, they are well worth it especially with the price drop early last week. I just checked on IBM's website (the make of the P3 server), and it has 256k of L2 cache. Btw, I'm primarily going to be selling game servers on this...I'll be doing a little web hosting of my own, but that's where most of the resources will be used. Trying to decide between the top 2 servers @ http://www.webreseller.net/ (for when they come in). |
