View Full Version : ModernBill 4 or ModernBill 5?
iHubNet 09-24-2006, 07:59 AM Hello,
MB5 is out and it is been little bit. Still I am using MB4, but I have read thread about bugs or error even it is released version.
How many you guys move to MB5?
Thanks
AvailNetworks 09-24-2006, 03:01 PM we are considering the move when we launch our new site. They look like they have a pretty good handle on it and 5.1 should be released very shorty (weeks). I have been advised by one of their support personnel to wait until that version to move from v4 to v5.x because 5.1 will have some good fixes and updates.
Once 5.1 comes out then we will do some extensive testing and see if it is worth the upgrade, so far I expect good things from it
linux-tech 09-24-2006, 03:45 PM At this point, your best option is neither.
Find yourself a script which does the same thing as modernbill, has modernbill import functions and go from there.
Why? Simple, really
Modernbill 4:
-- Will be developed no further
-- Will not (ever) support php 5.1
Those are the two important key problems there, whereas:
Modernbill 5:
-- 10% upgrade (if that). You have to do the upgrade yourself, meaning all the important stuff has to be manually imported, because the staff was too busy to implement a proper upgrade path.
-- API / Developer requirements
Notice anything unusual about mb5? As in NOBODY'S done anything for it, yet? Kayako, SupportTrio, so many more.. They haven't even released anything for mb5, even though it's been out for months (stable), and their customers have been screaming for it. MB has SERIOUSLy dropped the ball here on anything that does not make them a ton of money.
-- Ease of use? Where? In modernbill, this is a well known problem, but in mb5, it's just gotten worse. Setting up a package which used to take 5 minutes, now will take 30+, with writing custom data and all that. It's just a mess.
Modernbill has upset quite a few people with this last release. Of course there are always going to be those that are quite happy with it, but, they really have chosen an incredibly poor way to do this one.
lbeachmike 09-25-2006, 03:11 AM Agreed on MB releasing an unusable product, and shame on them for putting the burden of a very painful upgrade on the user. This is pretty unprecedented in the software world, since most software is backwards compatible.
And the support for when we actually did make a very dedicated attempt to upgrade ... ? Very poor.
We'll see what they've learned when 5.1 is released. I remain optimistic. They did a beautiful job on the new checkout. But they've left us on our own in terms of figuring out how to actually use the product ... *if* you can get it running.
mrk
WireNine 09-25-2006, 06:24 AM Currently with MB4, maybe after v5.4 we'll begin using v5 or not.
BluewaveHosted 09-25-2006, 07:18 AM I would never go back to MB, after I tasted the simplicity and easy-to-use theme of www.lpanel.net. Try it your self, and you'll see what I mean!
SwiftModders 09-26-2006, 06:54 PM We are currently using Modernbill v4. We do not expect to migrate and upgrade to v5 until sometime next year. We are looking at a 5.2+ release minimum. I would not suggest using MBv5 in a production environment.
NaysNay 09-29-2006, 06:48 PM Modernbill 5 has a lot of potential
ModernAdvisors 10-02-2006, 10:24 PM Hello,

I don't use ModernBill v4, or v5 at this time. When I ran my previous company, I ran v4, and it was very reliable. At my previous website, I noticed v5 had a lot of major bugs in it. With the stable release of 5.1, many issues will have been resolved.
Limapoint 10-03-2006, 12:52 AM I will also suggest to stick to 4.4 until a better version of v5 is released. I say the sale as John, 5.2+.

Yeah, that's one thing evident in both versions. The developers are clearly just that: developers, and only think in terms of the way they code. They don't think about abstract things like people and services. Case in point, look at the management of hosting accounts in v4. You have two edit buttons, right next to each other, that edit two different sets of data. Why not one single button? Because there are two database tables and that's what they see as programmers. They seriously need to learn some usability fast.

I couldn't agree more with the two of you..... As far as features, modernbill is stunning, VERY feature-rich.... However usability isn't terrible, IMHO its completely non-existent in modernbill....
Right now I am now a clientexec user, and I am quite happy with it I might add, but I must say that I must have demoed modernbill a million times.... If modernbill can get their usability worked out, and comparable to CE, I'd consider moving......(However, on the other side of the coin, CE has been chugging away lately really putting out some major features I had been waiting for... CE is definately looking impressive in these latest releases).. I even bought a MB v5 license to try it out when it had first come out.... what a mess; however to be fair, from what I've heard, move of the major things have been worked out and its definately gotten better since I used it.

EDIT: Just realized I went a bit out of topic, but to answer the question, I'd say MB4 right now.
