Exodus and Internap don't have their own backbones. Exodus uses the Cable & Wireless backbone exclusively, and Internap aggregates badnwdith from multiple providers.

I guess the question you probably want to ask is: Which hosting companies are colocated in the Exodus/Internap data centers?

Might also note that Exodus went bye-bye some time ago, their data centers were sold to Cable & Wireless at fire-sale prices. Their bandwidth is plain old C&W bandwidth.

InterNAP is a network access point, they bring in bandwidth from 9 different carriers, including C&W, Worldcom, Verio, UUNET, Sprint, AT&T...And they do sell remote connectivity (either Internet access or transit) anywhere from Fract T1 to OC-12.

Anybody who is co-located at Exodus or InterNAP is going to be expensive, because those facilities don't offer their space cheap. I had a friend who worked for Exodus (before they went bankrupt), he told me what they charge for hosting, as well as for racks and cages and I blacked out from the impact of all those zeroes.

Internap also charges way more for their T1's, etc., than the going rate, but if they meet even a fraction of their promises they are worth it. They have amazing SLA terms.

The company I work for is looking at bringing in an InterNAP circuit to replace one from Intermedia that was great until they were taken over by Allegiance, whose network has some serious problems with latency and packet loss. And whose staff has some serious problems with dealing with this.

Are there any hosts out there using InterNAP, and how are they doing for you?

That's interesting, I just looked at their website to find information about their connectivity offerings...it looks like they are kind of like a SAVVIS. Do they terminate the connections to their data centers, or do they have separate POPs?

coleone -- my apologies for the misinformation before.

A partner of mine currently hosts almost 2,000 web sites and has two full cabinets in the InterNAP center in Atlanta. He is completely and thoroughly thrilled with InterNAP. The SLA is 100% uptime and they have met that for over a year in his case.

The most amazing thing about InterNAP is that they remap their network daily to minimize latency. Using 9 backbone providers, they can do that. They also have language in their SLA regarding guaranteed sub 35ms latency 24/7.

InterNAP owns the Atlanta center and because of that has some fairly flexible pricing there. I can only tell you what they quoted me to colo my servers in their Atlanta facility: $700 per mo for a full cabinet and $400 per mbit, with the cost per mbit dropping as I purchase more. I could get 3 mbit for $900 total.

The facility is very impressive. It's a virtual fortress.

They are not like Savvis in any way. Savvis' third-rate network is not what it appears to be on paper. One of my colleagues in another sector of the industry had the misfortune of bringing in a DS-3 from them and the realities of their QoS and the truth about their infrastructure resulting in them being promptly replaced.

Regarding InterNAP, I can't say how it is in all of their markets, but the information we got on our quote was that they'd terminate the connection directly at their data center in Somerville, MA.

We love our Internap. REALLY love them.

Each Internap "PNAP" has connectivity with between 5 to 9 different Tier 1 providers; each PNAP is different. Their reliability is superb, their NOC is absolutely the best I've ever dealt with, but they aren't cheap (far from it!). The best part about it is that they're very pro-active regarding their blend of bandwidth and equipment. We're always getting notifications that affect our PNAP, letting us know that there's loss or latency on a line, and what the status is. No managing tickets with 7 different providers. :) If they're noticing a problem on Verio, and they'll turn down Verio until it gets fixed. When we've had to do maintenance and have to disconnect a line to reroute a cable or replace a router, they contact us in less than a minute. When we unplugged Level3, there was never any indication that they noticed. Ever.

Taking a trip from one PNAP to another PNAP, however, will route you on the best available Tier 1 network. They don't have their own backbone. Good thing, and bad thing. Lots of dark fiber available out there. :D

There've been a lot of comments on Internap on isp-bandwidth.com's mailing list archives. You may want to search there if you want to read more rants and raves.

why don't you try to contact both companies directly.... not that many resellers, that are reselling their services, can offer a better pricing...

But resellers can offer flexible minimum commitments and contract terms.

Are you looking to put a server with someone who has connections to Internap & Exodus or are you looking for a webhosting provider who has Internap & Exodus?

I love Internap! Not only their network is rock solid (100% network uptime so far since we moved with them on May 2002), but their NOC support people are really responsive and helpful!

Their pricing is pretty reasonable. Can't complain about that ....

Four thumbs UP for Internap.
