Can anyone give me some information on how to purchase an edu domain? I have all the necessary educational papers to show that the site is for an educational institution. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, you just send an email to Jon Postel... oops, he's not around any more.
EDU domains are handled the same way as COM, NET and ORG domains, except that somewhere along the line they will ask for documentation proving that you are a degree-granting institution. (You must grant degrees -- schools etc. don't qualify).
Of course, most places probably don't how to handle EDU domains, so I'd suggest you go with NSI for this one.

Well, yes, of course you have to qualify. 4-year colleges and universities, and in some cases academic research institutions (although that too might be out by now) are the only organizations eligible.

And I believe these have to be US-based colleges/universities?

Hi,
to your Answer:
-+-+-+-
From the 000domains.com FAQ
We are a reseller of TUCOWS, Inc. through their OpenSRS program. You will find TUCOWS among the ICANN accredited registrars.
-+-+-+-
Look at there Index-Site and you will find a Banner of OpenSRS !
When you register very much Domains I think its then the best when you go direct via OpenSRS, they are then a littlebit cheaper as 000domains.com !
Some Day's ago I found a very cheap and official Registrar: Stargate [http://www.stargateinc.com/], they give you the Domain for !!! USD 8.-- !!! when you register two or more Domains at the same Time. I will transfer in the future all My Domains to them (= will save CHF 437.60 btw. ~ USD 261.93 for all My 90+ Domains].
