i see lots of apple users whom swear by there new operating system OSX . I also see that apple has released the xserve , which is pretty expensive for what they are offereing inside the box . Heres my question though , if osx is so great , why does (according to netcraft.com/last updated jun 11) apple.com use a solaris box ? You would think apple would stand behind there product , why are they using a pc to serve on ? And why do they sell servers , yet not actually use what they sell , would it be safe to say apple isnt ready to use there own machines for a site that im sure gets lots of traffic ? Maybe im wrong , maybe netcraft is wrong , but what do you people think ?

update , i notice i get 2 different results from netcraft , apple.com is running solaris and www.apple.com is running darwin (how is this possible), but when i check on quicktime.com and www.quicktime.com , they are also running solaris and netscape enterprise

Darwin is OS X, just in case you were wondering. Also I would assume that Apple has a load balancer in place, which would result in that.

Back to OS X, while I personally don't have any Apple servers, I can tell you that a company near where I live has servers running OS X which have been up without a reboot for over a year. Not to mention that half a terabyte of hot swapable hard drives is pretty damn sweet. And go over to ibm.com... Comparable servers cost about the same.

Just in case you were wondering, I have more PC's than Mac's.

I don't know what Sun box Apple.com is running but I doubt its a "PC".

Just a guess - more than one of these?

The most obvious answer is two different machines. http://apple.com and http://www.apple.com do not have to point to the same box.

Keep in mind that OS X is based on a modified BSD kernel.
