View Full Version : Seeking hosting advice, my needs included

Hi there, I'm currently in the midst of developing a gaming 'network', covering two, possibly more Massively Multiplayer Games (yes, another site :p but we're covering games that aren't being undertaken by too many people at a good degree). Now I hope you can take my lack of knowledge of web hosting into consideration, especially with dedicated servers (not that I'm unwilling to learn, very much the opposite).

One small note, I currently use hostway.com, and have used them for a long time, on the Gold Plus plan. I've not used the space much to be honest, I've just had it there for when I needed it, and it suits me for the development phase of this site :)

As such I have nothing good, nor bad to say for hostway, it's just always been there when I needed it.

The things I know I need, or things I just would like:

at least 20GB monthly transfer. While I generally create designs that are low in KB, things like screenshots and [possibly] movies can such on the bandwidth.

at least 200MB web space.

freedom to script, particularly including PHP and MySQL.

subdomain flexibility, i.e. to have <gamename>.<domainname>.com without incurring large charges.

The 'standard' security features, and support.

Fast is a natural desire in a host, and I'm fairly aware of the difference between a shared host and a dedicated server in potential speed difference (and after some research of late I'm also aware of the costs, although some I have seen are reasonable).

A last requirement would be flexibility in the package, where I can upgrade when I need to, without incurring many fees.

I suppose I just described a pretty vague bunch of requirements, and for that I'm sorry :o If there's a major requirement/category I've missed mentioning, then just ask me :)

Also, I realise there are rules for people promoting their own services, as such I don't know if I'd be undermining the rules in asking people to PM me with their addresses if they feel they can offer something I may be interested in.

Ok, going to cut myself off here before I waffle any more.

Thanks in advance :)

/begins acquiring a complex on the View vs. Response stakes.

I also wanted to append that, while I see other people posting about the Hosting Requests, at the moment I'm just exploring my options, or indeed what I should be looking at. It's all just early stage forward planning :)

I suggest you post your requirements in the Web Hosting Requests forum.. You will get tons of offers there.. Anyway, good luck on your search.. :)

hehe, beat you...by moments :D

Just advice that I seek for now, whether a dedicated server is what I may end up on, considering my needs, and such like :)

I won't take up offers for a good month or more, and as such I would feel guilty posting a 'request'. (could be that I'm misunderstanding the mission of the Hosting Request forum however) ;)

Moments? I would say seconds.. hehe :D ... Anyway, by the looks of it… I don't think you really do not need a dedicated server... You might want to go with virtual hosting... I think anybody can offer you 20-25 GB and 200-500 MB easily & offer you all the features that mentioned above. Plus it would be a relatively cost effective solution.

Thanks :)

I guess I'll stick to browsing the other people's hosting requests for similar types, and will post back when I need stuff :)
