View Full Version : What's your favorite unix OS?
chrisb 06-11-2002, 02:58 AM What's your favorite unix operating system to host your website on? Linux, Debian, FreeBSD, or other?
Which is more reliable, faster, etc?
What are the upsides/downsides you've come across in using one particular unix OS that you did not find in another unix OS?
Favorite: FreeBSD
Reliable:FreeBSD
Faster:FreeBSD
Pros:Too many to mention
Cons:none
davidb 06-11-2002, 03:32 AM I had over 150 days uptime with freebsd, need I say more?
(Stephen) 06-11-2002, 03:48 AM I have 174 days uptime on a customer p75 dial-up router, with a load average of 0.01%, it even runs a few CGI scripts for changing settings on it.
But I still like FreeBSD, I just used linux because there were some nice pre-made simple router solutions out there.

Why? FreeBSD under the hood with an Apple GUI on top of it! the best of both world.
we ran some custom rendering program in genetics on our SGIs and Linuxes. we recompiled for OS X and that baby kicked ass:
a 3K G4 powerbook titanium was twice as fast as the 13K SGI.... the IT guy was shaking his head in disbelief:D
Gadgy 06-11-2002, 07:11 PM Linux.
But, I am finding the temptation of FreeBSD just a little overpowering. Must have BOTH!
:D

The Prohacker 06-11-2002, 08:38 PM FreeBSD is a great OS, but it will take a bit more overhead on ram, than Linux will, but with ram prices low, thats not a big concern....
viGeek 06-12-2002, 12:35 AM FreeBSD, lean, mean, fighting machine.
bombino 06-12-2002, 01:12 AM FreeBSD! :D Ports rock the house! ;)

Yes, it is FreeBSD kernel. They are employing some of the best FreeBSD hackers. They once considered Linux but they are not allowed to proprietarize it.
