Hi,

Just bought a domain from GoDaddy, but have a small problem now. I don't want my details to show up on the WhoIs database, and I didn't see an opt-out during registration.

Can someone please direct me as to where I can remove my details within the control panel?

Thank you very much.

I belive godaddy has "whois protection" it costs something like 5$ check out the details here:

Ah, so WhoIs protection is not available for me domain, does anyone have any idea whether the "deluxe business registration" can do the job for removing personal details etc? Really am annoyed with myself with all of this now.

Thanks again.

Humm, You can add privacy to your existing domain names using the Manage Domains section of your Account Manager.

Did you check there? :D

Sorry, didn't mention that it's a .co.uk domain, it only gives me the option of the deluxe business option.

How's the most basic hosting package on GoDaddy, any good?

If godaddy can't add the private registration extra maybe you could transfer the domain over to a place like enom or register and add it during there checkout. This will cost you an additional $12-16 dollars but it may be worth it if you really need it.

Ahh, OK I see now thats just for some certain extensions. You could use the search feature here in the forum and read the feedback on godaddy. Theres quite abit of mixed reviews and seems the biggest complaint with them is support related.
Personally I would never recommend them for hosting but I think domain registration is fine. :D

Thanks for the information, how easy would it be to transfer the domain considering I just registered the domain today? And would there be any extra expenses (apart from the 12-16dollars for privacy protection)?

Apologies for rather newbish questions, don't often deal with domains/hosting etc, and when i do, it's usually UK based ones, so a bit different.

You wont be able to "transfer registrars" since you just registered it today. You will have to wait 60 days and then transfer. Whenever you do transfer a name registration then usually the gaining registrar will just add one year registration onto your expiration date.

What you "could" do if you really want the private whois is just choose another name all together? Maybe the same name but a different extension? Register it with the private whois....get you host, etc.

I think domain registration is fine.I agree, I can't say I had any issues with Godaddy's domain registration. The again, my experience with them is not particularly vast.

Namecheap has been my choice of late though, and they have a one year free WhoisGuard promotion, for all new domain registrations and transfers. http://www.namecheap.com/learn/privacy-protection/free-whoisguard-promo.asp

Thread move to Domain Name Forum.

Not for .co.uk, they can only be registered for 2 years and a transfer will not add anything to the current expiry.

No problem. Basically, the way it works is totally different from .com etc, while they can be registered for between 1 to 10 years, UK domains can only be registered for 2 years, you cannot register them for more or less. Moving them to another provider is totally different as well, you need an IPS tag for the new provider and when you change that it takes effect pretty much instantly, which means a domain can be transferred between registrars within hours rather than days.

Anyway, this is off-topic, so I better be quiet. :)

Why no one has mentioned that .co.uk has NOT privacy protection as we understand it, at the registrar level. The *registry* (Nominet UK) has made an option for non-trading individuals to opt-out from showing actual address and phone number, however the name of the registrant will be still visible...
