Its hard to keep all of your clients!

Either you lose them to another host or they just go out of business and no longer need a host but how much do you lose?

Hiya Motley Fool,

I am Dana from arura.com. Sorry I had leave Valai.net (http://www.valai.net) . You installed IMP without cost for me and did your best to keep me. I asked for services that you couldn't provide without messing up your server, so the best solution was to find another host.

I think you don't mind I send a copy of your last letter:

"I will refund all of it within 30 days.

I am a businessman and you are the customer, and I come from the old school
where the customer is always right

Again my apologies for the confusion and poor service levels
"

I wish your good luck.

Dana

Dana,

It is so nice of you to post this here and thanks for that! :)

But I would still like to take the full blame for not understanding your expectations upfront; for me it's just the loss of a 25$ opportunity.

For you it meant not being able to receive email for a day @yourdomain.com [and I kick myself hard for that lapse].

I consider it poor service levels indeed

Thanks a lot

Balaji

We lose at least 1-3 customer a month.

I would say roughly 1 every 3 months. Usually do to someone offering a little bit more for cheaper.. And out of the few that have left alot have ended up coming back a couple months down the road..

Greetings:

Our parent company looses approximately 1 to 2% per year of their hosting client base.

I cant believe someone voted that they lose more than 10 customers a month!

They must be Arthur Anderson!

:D

We lose way more then this. It isn't the total number that you lose that matters, it is the churn rate and keeping it on or below industry standards that matters. The person who put 1 - 2% of yearly churn, I question that response. 2 - 4% seems like average monthly churn numbers. Meaning if you have 1000 customers, you should expect to lose 20 - 40 customers/mo.

Also, you must count all loses. Not jusy the ones who move to new host, but count dead beats who are canceled for non-payment and people who just don't want a web site anymore. If you are losing more customers to other hiost, then you do to non-payment or going out of business, then that is when youhave a serious problem.

Places with over 100,000s of customers lose 1000s a month.

About 1 every 12 months.

Good record so far.

The poll is moot. You can only view it properly in percentages like this customer responded, and UmBillyCord explained.

Percentage can be divided in to a ratio to be broken down into a monthly amount!

As a analyst I can tell you it means the same thing!

I aint no analyst, but used to have a friend that worked for Arthur Anderson. Does that count? :)

Talking about just the poll:
How can you arrive at a percentage or a ratio with just one number? I.E., I lost 4 customers. Don't you also need to know the total amount of customers. That wasn't stated in the poll.

No big deal. I only mentioned it because I get tired of many of the polls posted here that do nothing, yet I don't mind the polls that tell us "something", regardless of how accurate they might me.

We usually lose around 1 a month, but as it has been said you cant always help it, IE. They go out business:) In my mind, its ok to lose a client as long as you dont lose them through bad service or support:)

Client is always right ...

No, he isn't. I don't know what type of analyst you are, but UmBillyCord usually makes posts that are informative, logical, and right on point. You took one of his sentences from his post out of context. He was saying that if you lost 2-4% a month, and had 1000 customers, you would lose 20-40 customers... and that is 2-4%. Here is the relevant part that he posted.
