Just wondering, if there is anything that FreeBSD cannot do that Linux does? I.E., can you run the same commands from the command line?
I did a Search here before posting this thread and, though I found "FreeBSD vs Linux" threads, I could not find anything
that said whether there is more free software for FreeBSD than Linux., Anyone know?
Additionally, I posted a request in the Requests Forums for those FreeBSD hosts that would like to respond there. Thanks.
EDIT: MODERATORS... I meant to put this in the main forum. Please move to main forum. Thanks.

Chris,
In my opinion, FreeBSD is a lot more robust and versatile OS than Linux. Linux is popular because of the abundant documentation and the control panels choice
In a hosting context you can do everything in FreeBSD that you do in Linux and many times easier [but this is my opinion]

And because of RPMs.. because of easy installation.. because of more features with GUI.. but still I like FreeBSD more. I'm running FreeBSD 4.2 on my home PC with KDE3, XFree86 4.2 and everything is compiled from sources. I'd like to say that FreeBSD 4.2, with installed KDE3 from sources is MUCH faster than RedHat 7.2 with the same. IMHO FreeBSD works better with prioritets and has more features related to security.

Linux has some commands that FreeBSD doesn't have (and FreeBSD doesn't have the same /proc system Linux does). FreeBSD also has some commands that Linux doesn't have. However, they each have commands that make up for the missing commands.
Examples:
Linux has useradd, groupadd, and usermod.
FreeBSD does not. Instead it uses pw for all three.
FreeBSD has sockstat.
Linux does not. Instead you use netstat with some options (FreeBSD has netstat too, but sockstat is much nicer).
I could not find anything

That's because FreeBSD will run anything Linux can run (if you have the Linux Compatability Binaries installed). On the other hand, if something was written specifically for BSD, Linux won't be able to run it (not that I know of anyway...) unless there is a BSD emulator or BSD compatability binaries roaming the land.
In all, I feel FreeBSD is better. Yes, Linux has things FreeBSD doesn't (ACLs for example), but I still feel FreeBSD is king of the mountain. Just my personal opinion. :)

FreeBSD is great. I only wish a native Java 2 JVM is released soon without any licensing restrictions.

Yes, I have been waiting for that too. They say a Java 2 VM would be released December last year, but so far, nothing yet.
I think I am just going to wait for FreeBDS 5.0 before I start my learning of Free BSD.
