Seems a good deal - whats the catch? http://www.theplanet.com/server.html prime 06-10-2002, 12:10 AM The offer in question - 1U Space-saving chassis Dual Integrated Intel Nics 100Gb of Internap bandwidth or 200Gb of Cogent bandwidth Pentium 4 – 1.6Ghz Processor 8 MB Video Card 1IP with 99.9% SLA 256MB of Ram Rackspace in a World Class Datacenter 40GB ATA 100 7200RPM Hard Drive Linux or Windows 2000 Server Setup = ONLY $149 Monthly Recurring Charge = ONLY $149 I think they're a bit pricey, considering they're offering cogent bandwitdh. I'd say they're about 40$ over their competitors for 1/2 the bandwitdh. The processor is the machine's best asset, and that may account for some of the higher monthly fee, but it could easily be paid in a few months after which you'll pay for nothing. The 256 megs of ram in such a server won't be enough if you begin to push the machine to its limit. You should see how much they charge for more. I really liked the part about the video card... I don't really know about windows servers, but in Linux servers that has got to be the most inimportant piece of hardware... I haven't browsed their web site completely. They seem like a well established company, but appearances can be deceiving. If they have great technical support, they could be a company to watch in the future. Just my 2 cents (well... maybe you had the full dollar... ;) ) trelane 06-10-2002, 01:49 AM I think the catch here is that they charge a lot for more IP's, RAM, hard drives, etc. on a monthly basis. If you are satisfied with the offer as is, go for it. Otherwise, I'd see if they will budge at all on their upgrade fees before signing up. Originally posted by prime I think they're a bit pricey, considering they're offering cogent bandwitdh. But they are also offering InterNAP bandwidth. InterNAP bandwidth is excellent, and comes at a premium. Originally posted by prime The 256 megs of ram in such a server won't be enough if you begin to push the machine to its limit. Definately look into upgrading this to 512 MB at the least, 1024 MB preferrably. After looking at their upgrade price list, I'd ask them if you can pay for the RAM upgrade one-time, because they charge a lot for the upgrade in a monthly fee. I really hope you're kidding here. The video card, in Windows or Linux, doesn't mean squat. Originally posted by prime I haven't browsed their web site completely. I know that HardOCP.com uses them, and has had a positive experience so far. InterNAP bandwidth + Pentium 4, sounds like a solid deal to me. prime 06-10-2002, 03:21 AM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by prime I really liked the part about the video card... I knew 4 hours ago I should stop reading & posting and go to bed... diederik 06-10-2002, 03:27 AM Damn... $ 120 monthly to upgrade RAM to 1 GB  jasoncart 06-10-2002, 03:33 AM Upgrade costs are a little strange, but this new server would be an upgrade for me anyhow I'm tempted by the 200Gb Cogent bandwidth rather than the 100Gb of Internap - is it really that worse? I little digging reveals some articles about HardOCP's experiences - http://hardocp.com/article.html?art=Mjc5 http://hardocp.com/article.html?art=Mjgw Goose 06-10-2002, 11:07 PM Take the Cogent, there is nothing wrong with Cogent! We have had there 1000mbit connection for the past 2 years without any problem.. Blah all you people that think it's bad! jw 06-10-2002, 11:53 PM Have you seen the building they are located in?
