View Full Version : Should I or should I not?
madhost 06-09-2002, 01:43 AM The plan, quit being a truck driver.
The reason tired of it and getting more and more into this web hosting deal.
What im thinking of doing is getting a dedicated server from rack shack and start a hosting company. Problem is im only home on weekends, and would need some one to help.
Now could this be feasible to do
Hire someone for 10 to 20% of net profits to look after things during the week. And if so how do you go about checking references.
my plans is to be outta truck by this time next year or sooner.
Thx n advanced for all input
madhost 06-09-2002, 01:48 AM BTW im jumpin in to it im not goin reseller or anything like that
Since you asked Im going to have to vote "not" . Not that I dislike you, I don't know you, but the world really doesn't need anymore people that think a true host is as simple as slapping up a server and a cheap one at that. If you don't have 20hrs a day to invest in it then you'll never reach your goal of getting out of that truck, plain and simple.
NexDog 06-09-2002, 01:56 AM Hmmmm......
Just jump out your truck and into a Rackshack box. Hope you have some good Linux and Apache books because you will need them. They don't fully manage your server and if you run into big problems, you will have big problems. ;)
What about a site, support tools, advertising and other things. There is alot more to hosting and providing a good service than just renting a cheap box and start to fill it.
Unless you have someone with you that knows about hosting in general and knows some other stuff like how to get around an open_base restriction while php is running in safe mode, then my advice is to start as a reseller and get some knowledge or learn fast. Learning fast means dedicating 20 hours a day for 6 months. After that you will know enough to expand and teach others.
NexDog 06-09-2002, 01:57 AM Jag, damn, same time, same message, ;)
viGeek 06-09-2002, 02:04 AM I agree with Jag & Nexdog on this one!

well im workin on site now and ive downloaded and put redhat on my home pc to do the learning curve
Radix 06-09-2002, 02:25 AM At the very least get your site done first and I would maybe get my server and start workin on it once you are ready. The better the site the better your chances. I looked at a poll and I was shocked to see how many people turn away some hosts based on site design alone. Sounds kinda scary to me though =)
bababooey 06-09-2002, 02:32 AM It's really funny that you should post this message, because I was thinking of quitting Web Hosting and going into truck driving! I don't know much about trucks or driving, but I just bought a bicycle and plan to learn how to ride it soon!
Seriously, I wouldn't do it unless I really liked working with computers (enough to work on them 18hrs/day) and could commit myself to the new venture. I don't understand why you cannot start with a reseller plan. You need to learn how to walk before you can run.
Radix 06-09-2002, 02:44 AM Sit in a truck seat all day or sit in front of a computer all day :cartman: . I didnt think it would take "that" much time to be a reseller or whatever it is hes trying to do.

i dont see any reselling plans to where it would warrant me quitting
Radix 06-09-2002, 03:15 AM I rarely sleep and Im almost always on a computer. I may not stay up five days but I wont sleep more than 4 hours a day of those 5 days .

William 06-09-2002, 03:17 AM Well you can always start part time reselling, loose some of your profit margin at first and allow the company to manage all the accounts.
it`s a start :)
Now could this be feasible to do
Hire someone for 10 to 20% of net profits to look after things during the week. Sure...there is always 'someone' willing if you put the right requests out. The key is having a sound business plan to ensure that 10 to 20% will cover minimum wage at ummm well minimum ;) If they aren't making any real money...but are doing a lot of _Real Work_ they wont last and that'll leave you in a bad position.
Ask yourself this: If this "risk taker" is willing to do "most of the work" for 10 to 20% are they really worth the "risk"? And if so how do you go about checking references. Call the numbers they provide you and make sure it checks out. Listen "between the lines" to what the previous employer is telling you. There can be risks in "telling too much" about a previous employee but if you listen carefully you'll get the right idea. The most popular question tacked on to the end of a reference call is "Would you hire them again?" The time it takes them to answer, the tone of their voice, and the type of answer (a direct YES or NO or long drawn out babbling) will tell you most of what you need to know.
Radix 06-09-2002, 03:36 AM Im just wodering why you didnt go to college or something so you could get pretty much any job you want in the first place? Then you could be a big IT techy :stickout

1. smoked too much weed
2.spent more time outta school than in
3.why?
4.dont need too i can pretty much learn stuff on my own
5no need to spend all that cash
6.no diploma
Radix 06-09-2002, 04:15 AM 3.why?
Because if latter on in life you don't like what you are doing you are not so ****ed.
4.dont need too i can pretty much learn stuff on my own
Those skills come in handy in high school =)
5no need to spend all that cash
It is an investment that will last a life time. Take a loan... join the army... Sounds like you are going to be taking a loan before long if you keep this webhosting idea. Technical schools don't cost as much anyways.
6.no diploma
GED? A lot you can do with a GED... more than you may think.
Well I guess its too late now.
madhost 06-09-2002, 04:19 AM refer to #1:D
i can do this and im not STOOPEDD by far
1. smoked too much weed
2.spent more time outta school than in
3.why?
4.dont need too i can pretty much learn stuff on my own
5no need to spend all that cash
6.no diploma 1. Bummer
2. Bummer
3. ?
4. Kewl
5. fair enough
6.   Go get the GED!! It'll make YOU feel better and those you work with/for. It only takes a few hours if you've already learned everything on your own... or a few more hours if you need to brush up. You may never use it.. but since it's cheap (sometimes free) and takes little time why not prove it to yourself and never have to say "no diploma" again? I may be flamed for this but most (not all) who do not at least go back and grab the GED show a serious lack of initiative and I've yet to hear a GOOD reason why.
I wouldn't work for nor employ someone without a diploma. Not because the diploma proves they "know more" but because it proves they can complete a standard task.
I've watched multiple adults change their lives over that silly piece of paper. Those who never received it continued to work jobs THEY claimed were dead end jobs and griped about them. Those who finally decided to get that piece of paper experienced serious attitude adjustments just because one little thing that had been eating away at them for years was finally out of the way; and they were proud of it. It wasn't anything to "brag about" on the outside but it was plenty to brag about on the inside. I'm sure it felt good to stop lying on the job applications too.
FWIW I had three kids by the age of 18, missed the last three years of high-school, obtained my GED on what would have been my graduation day and went on to college from there. Maybe this is why your first 5 comments didn't phase me...but your last one I can't think of an excuse for :P
If you've got the energy to drive trucks and/or start a hosting company..you should have enough to take a few hours and snag that GED. Go For It!! It's only useless if improving your own self image is also useless.
$0.02 you didn't ask for...

just remember the next time you pull out in front of a truck that is grossing out at 80000 lbs that that truck weighs more than you and cant stop on a dime
i had a question to ask and it was answered
NexDog 06-09-2002, 05:48 AM Ummm....what's a GED?

Well, if you really get so pissed off when someone cuts you off, what are you going to do when an angry customer e-mails you and complains about your service because they don't know how to set up Netscape Mail or because they are trying to log in with the CAPS LOCK key on?
I know how hard it is to be a trucker. My father-in-law's buddy just got axed because he fell asleep at the wheel and totaled his rig and his load. I just don't think that one can jump into the hosting fray with little or no experience. I know it seems easy when you read that 15 and 16 year olds are doing it, but trust me, even those guys have been into computers for years.
If you are installing and running Red Hat for the first time, then you may want to re-think your plan. As far as hiring someone to do the majority of the work while you sit back and count the money...good luck with that search. It may be easier for you to find someone to drive your truck and you could give him 10% of your trucker's paycheck.
If you start a business, you should expect to do 99% of the work yourself (unless you are being funded by venture capitalists). That's just the way small businesses work. This means that you need both the aptitude and the desire to work with computers. This is A LOT different than playing EverQuest for 15 hours on your vacation. Playing on a computer 'till 5 in the morning because you have nothing better to do is a lot different than working on a server 'till 5 in the morning because half of your customers are down.

I don't get it. Just study for one test and that's the same as a 4 year degree?
Or.............

Not a 4 year degree -- It is used as an equivalent to a high school diploma.
NexDog 06-09-2002, 10:43 AM Still, funny old system.;)

madhost 06-09-2002, 12:48 PM SO what it boils down to is get reselling first
Hiccups 06-09-2002, 02:08 PM GED = Good Enough Diploma :)
Second chance if you were not able to get the 'real' one for whatever reason though. Think it is good to be able to prove yourself later on anyway. Anyone without the high school diploma should go for that one instead. Sure beats nothing!
Radix 06-09-2002, 05:23 PM Most of what you can do with a HSD you can do with a GED including college
