Take a look at http://www.interpromicro.com. For merely $860 you can get a 1U web server (PIII 600/128MB/20GB). The cheapest rackmount server I have ever seen. What do you think about this? :)

cheers,

Well, if you take the cost of purchasing it and then still co-locating it, it works out the same as renting a server.

dektong,

I would first find out the quality of parts they use in these systems... I have contacted them before about some other matters but never took it any further then that.

We build our own servers now... That way we know exactly what parts are going into it and can have more control over the process. Just remember, it might be cheaper now to go with cheaper parts but the first time it breaks at the co-location facility and you have to pay them 100.00+ per hour to fix it, it will not be worth the initial savings :)

For a good 1U server check out http://www.gtweb.net/cs440.html

For the other parts setup an account with Tech Data.

Nice link scottlaw. Do you know of any other companies that can build good quality boxes at reasonable prices? I recently got a server at http://www.racklocation.com and they use http://www.pogolinux.com which seem very good as well.

They have a sweet dual P3 rackmount for $1999:

Any feedback?

tabernack,

I would suggest that you build your own server... Find a good computer store in your area or buy wholesale from Tech Data and you can build a good quality server for 300 - 700 less then having one built for you. It will only take you about an hour or two to build.

I have found that the companies that build the servers for you usually charge more because of the warranty they provide. However, this warranty is usually worthless in a hosting setting since they either require you to send back the entire server or ship out a replacement part in 48 hours then send it second day air... Try explaining that to your customers when the server is down for 4 days. Also, you will most likely still have to pay the NOC to install the new hardware.

Also, if you are looking for a NOC for the server, I would suggest you try some of your local ISP's who provide dialup accounts. The dialup market is drying up and these companies are looking for ways to make money to pay for the lines. We called a few the other day in our area and where surprised how low the rates where. Plus, you have the server close to you if you need to fix or upgrade it.

Hm... I don't quite see it... what makes http://www.gtweb.com more reasonable that http://www.interpromicro.com? gtweb.com is about the same price range if not more expensive.
