View Full Version : Nameserver doesn't match IP?
Baltimore 08-17-2006, 10:07 AM Hi all, I recently bought a VPS server and now I have my own nameservers and IP's. To activate the nameservers have to change the DNS of my registar to the new nameservers and IP's.
I have my domain at Lycos, and they have a DNS Manager to do this. Now when I do this I get an error saying 'the IP do not match the nameserver'. What am I doing wrong? I have contacted my host provider and they saying the problem is with the registar. I have contacted the registar and it's like they not going to reply back, it's been now 2 days.
I just wanted to ask why I getting the error, what cause the problem? Has somebody experienced this also?
Thanks in advance.
Stan Marsh 08-17-2006, 10:15 AM 1. Get a good registrar.
And, if you want to use child nameservers for your domain (ns1/ns2.yourdomain.tld)
2. Create custom nameservers at registrar if they have this function. If they don't, look at #1.
3. Create A records for your nameservers in the zone file.
4. Make sure A records match the nameserver IPs at the registrar.
That's it.
Good luck!

Well the registar has a Zone Manager. I've made a screenshot: http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/6774/untitled2wr1.jpg
You say that I have to create A records for the nameservers. So you mean like those NS entry on the screenshot, but only with an A record?
I don't know what you mean with no. 4.... can you explain it more clearly. Thanks.
Stan Marsh 08-17-2006, 02:20 PM 1. It looks like you're trying to use your registrar's DNS, instead of changing them to your own...
2. I don't see any A records for ns1.yourdomain.tld and ns2.yourdomain.tld. Create them AT YOU VPS (as opposed to 'at your registrar').
3. Have you created nameservers at your registrar?
============
Perhaps I misunderstood your original question... You want to use something like ns1/ns2.yourdomain.com as your nameservers? If you do, then my answer are at least correct.
Baltimore 08-17-2006, 02:33 PM At my VPS I already have created the nameservers:
207.58.187.33 ns3.tbohiphop.net (main)
207.58.187.34 ns1.tbohiphop.net
207.58.187.35 ns2.tbohiphop.net
When I want to set these nameservers in DNS Manager (so changing the nameservers of lycos to my own nameservers) I get that error that the nameservers don't match their IP's, none of them.
The registar has also a Zone Manager (screenshot). So now you're saying to create
A - ns3.tbohiphop.net
A - ns1.tbohiphop.net
A - ns2.tbohiphop.net
in Zone Manager right?
What about the IP's?

OK, understood.

No. You must create NAMESERVERS at the registrar. I never used Lycos as my registrar, so I can't really comment where you can do this, but it MUST be done.
BTW, your IPs *REALLY* do differ. A record for ns1.tbohiphop.net is 212.78.206.150, for example. I haven't checked the other ones... Perhaps this is gonna change when you'll change your domain's DNS to your own at the registrar.
Good luck!
Baltimore 08-17-2006, 03:03 PM EDIT
Well, the only way to create the nameservers at the registar is use the Zone Manager.....
edit2-
212.78.206.150 is the IP of Lycos... Hmm I don't get it all this.

Read my #1 comment: get a good registrar. Unfortunately, there is no other way for you to create custom DNS if your registrar does not allow this.

Get a sysadmin. One way or another, you'll need one to keep your VPS updated and secure.

Ehm don't you mean this, I've taken a screenshot: http://i7.tinypic.com/24vsl76.jpg (dutch)

No I don't.
What I mean:
- change the registrar;
- get a sysadmin.
Baltimore 08-17-2006, 03:43 PM Well ok, I'll wait till tomorrow maby Lycos will reply back, or I'll call them.
Anyway, thanks for your help!
