I am looking for a decent web directory to develop a site. It seems that phpMyDirectory may do the trick, but the price is high.
Do you have any suggestions on other directories that could handle multiple categories?
IE: a database of restaurants with multiple categories like state, city, specialty, etc.
Aside from handling multiple categories, a search function on keywords.
Thanks in advance.

There are plenty of web directory scripts, i'd suggest you take a look at http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Link_Indexing/index.html
Most of the web directory scripts are posted there.

FYI - phpMyDirectory is a free script, they have a paid version with more features named phpLd
Not according to their site www.phpMyDirectory.com
A general license costs 99.95$ for a domain.

WSN Links (http://scripts.webmastersite.net/wsnlinks/index.php?section=showcase) has a lot of features but is kinda hard to customize.
I bought this several months back and see now that there is a "Simple" version which might not be so complicated.
I just wanted to point out that 'hard to customize' is pretty misleading IMO since it is possible to customize literally anything, something which no other directory script I've tried offers or allows. I would agree it can be daunting for someone who is not used to working directly with HTML code, but that is the only realistic way to offer such complete customability. It would be a complete drag if every tiny thing like all the css or templates required modifications through forms.
I have not tried the simple version but it may be much more simple to customize, using "pick your color" kind of interface to shield the first timer or non-programmer types from being overwhelmed by the awesome power the "Pro" script offers.
Although I've spent almost a year now with WSN-Links and am accustomed to programming in several languages and hand coding HTML, I've really only learned what I needed to know to get the script as I wanted. There is so much more that I may never use but it is very comforting to know that chances are it will be able to do what I want already if I put in the time to find out how.

I won't knock eSyndiCat, I nearly bought it after I tried it out. Fact is it couldn't hold a candle to WSN-Links in terms of flexability and features at the time. I imagine that it still can't. I image that they're just different approaches. eSyndiCat is like setting up a website with a 'site builder' kind of widget. WSN-Links on the other hand, although can provide a great out of box site, is more like setting up a zope instance.
I think many developers would, as I did, get bored of hitting walls with something less sophisticated than WSN-Links (http://scripts.webmastersite.net/wsnlinks/).
I think they are very smart having the handfull of premade professional looking templates included. That is surly a very strong selling point when you can just pop the script on a site and have the simple options of 9 different themes.
