Hi Guys, I run a small webhost off a couple of dedicated servers i have mainly for business clients who i have made sites for.

I have had someone approach me with a view to hosting a new adult site they are creating.

I know nothing about the rules regarding hosting adult sites in the UK

could someone please enlighten me?

thanks

Dewetha.

I am not sure on UK rules either. But be sure to check with the datacenter or dedicated server provider to see what their rules are on adult sites.

the dedicated server provider is fine with it. I dont know about the other aspects e.g whos liable if the customer hosts something that is illegal.

dont allow him to host illegal content, if he hosts illegal content suspend his account until all illigal content is removed or indefinetly. If you have a tos include that stiuplation in it.

Well I am not sure about UK, but in the States you should be carefull

I have adult sites myself and have been in the industry for a number of years so I am familar with it. I also allow adult hosting but with different rules than a regular business client.

So check into local laws, ask your lawyer (if you are going to do adult you will need one) and just be carefull especially if you are not familar with the industry and how it operates. It is mainly affiliate based so very aggressive saleman and techniques they use, including SPAM which could also get you in trouble both legally and with your server provider, even if they allow you to have adult content. So again I mention the lawyer, it is a good investment.

We don't do adult hosting but many of the firms which do, will typically keep their adult sites on seperate boxes. This is really important; your other clients may not want to be associated with the site in question, may be worried about having the IP blacklisted, etc.,

Very nice comment, Before the company i worked for didn't allow it they would have contracts at extra costs if you choose to host adult content, it was only a one off fee of $25 but the contract side of things worked, Had to be signed etc...

Safe side of things, just don't offer it... unless they show how legit they are!

If you don't know the legalities surrounding adult-related web hosting in the UK... don't do it. That simple.

Thats a very nice simple answer :D if you do not know about it then dont allow it its better then not knowing and then alllowing it then getting into trouble.

You can host the site in a different country that accepts it ;)

I know someone that does it. He sits very comfortable earning more than $200k a year in profit.

But that includes WAREZ as well.

the legalities, well thats a diffulcult one which is really why you ought not to do it. You technically have to have a licence in the UK to broadcast for public consumption although thats a little of a leap. The problem is though that there ius nothing that really covers it per se. Distribution of lewd material? Nope that doesn't cover it either.

My personal view is that until the legal position has been established clearly, you can host, but only legal license owned material which is not inherantly illegal in its practice, i.e. doing somthing which is illegal in itself.

Hope my ramblings help :)

Hello,

The question here is not of rules. The question here is whether your servers are compatiable to enough to host a adult site. The adult site is most visited sites in the world of internet and also it get the maximum hits. It also cosumes a hell lot bandwidth.

So you should have that kind of infrastructure which can really host a adult site with minimum problems.

Thank you.
