View Full Version : Want a simple web site

Some may call me computer illiterate. Truth is, I'm probably computer illigitimate. But here goes.

In two weeks, a friend and I are hosting a charity bike (Motorcycle) ride to raise money for a charity that is close to us. The man that has inspiered us will probably not be around in 6 - 7 months. I would like to be able to put together a simple web site to honor him and the others who suffer with ALS.

My goal for this site is to post links to the associtaion to which I give, some local bike shops, and the such. I would like to be able to archive pictures as we plan to host this run for years to come. Perhaps some video. I would also like a forum for the bikers to discuss this and other rides, road conditions, eateries. I don't think the site or the forums will be very busy since I don't plan to make money (no advertising is needed), and it will be pretty much local people and events. I would like to add weather, local headlines, and simple things along that line.

Like I said, nothing fancy. As I do not plan to make money from this, I would also like to not go broke either. What are the recomendations here?

Thanks,
Pat

Hi,

I would recommend signing up with any PHP, HTML compatible hosts and maybe run a online gallery to host your pictures and store them while your main page has all the info and such in basic HTML format, maybe you can contact a webdesigner to help out or get some advice from sites such as sitepoint.com on the design / coding aspect of things.

From your post I'd say any small packages should do the trick unless you're expecting a lot of heavy traffic.

Cheers

If you do not want to hire a web designer, you could find a host that offers cPanel with Fantastico. Fantastico has a number of site builders and gallery scripts that make it fairly simple to build a site.

BTW, from the rules:

You must make five (5) posts before utilizing the PM and system e-mail features. If you choose to make meaningless posts to circumvent this restriction, your account will be disabled. The OP is 4 posts away from that threshold. :)
