****************** (http://www.******************/) offers free domain names & hosting (with no ads). You just need to accumulate 100 points (by referring friends or signing up with advertisers) to get a year for free. You can then earn another 100 to get another year or get another domain name. And if you want to re-register, it's only $8.99. Looks good.

I remember one of those. This person had posted on a (messageboard) forum that he was starting one of those "free" hosting programs where the users had to sign up for all kinds of junk, as well as put links on their sites for their friends to sign up for junk to get the hosting for free. I am sure the person meant well when he offered it as a solution to those who couldn't pay for hosting, but here is what happened:
The people that signed up for the hosting complained on the (messageboard) forum about all kinds of stuff. From not getting their site activated quick enough to suit them, to having to sign up for the junk, that would support the hosting site in the first place. (what did they expect for free anyway?)
Then it happened. After getting about 20 or so sites signed up with mostly this (messageboard) software running, that poor server was smokin'!
The 'hosts' provider had no choice but to shut them down.
Then folks complained about that too, because now they had no site, and meanwhile were getting spammed from all the junk they signed up for.
Like I said, the guy meant well, but in the end all he got was greif, and everyone else gets spam forevermore.
