I vote for 780px but if the layout is designed using Frames, then it will have to be 100% to strech all the way which is standard design for Frames Layout.

its a lot more challenging to make 100% width site then a fixed width site. but if done right results always worth it. and today, when number of widescreen displays is booming, it that more important to make sites 100% width.

780 centered is the way to go.

Building to 100% is a HUGE mistake especially with increasing monitor sizes no matter what you do with it, unless someone designs a way to have gif's and jpg's automatically resize to any pixel dimension, your gonna have lots of chopped up space.

It's not a matter of which one I personally prefer, it's got more to do with what content the iste has and the best way of presenting it :)

This poll was difficult to answer because a websites width / resolution really depends on what the website is trying to accomplish. I do know that the majority of people now use 1024 x 768. So that would be something else to take into consideration when trying to decide a width or resolution for a website.

As a general rule, elastic so it can resize within a minimum and maximum width. In some cases, depending on the design and type os site, and thh clients needs/wants anything from fixed width (of any fixed width) to totally fluid (100%).

When I design static layouts I tend to go for 760px width but starting next year I will begin using 1024, I thinks it's time people got bigger monitors (a lot are still using 800x600).

I still design 780px - centered.

Although people have 17"+ monitors you'd be surprised how may still view the web at 800x600.

For four years I've been using 1600x1200, but my browser has never been on full size. 100% or 760px - either one works for me. And I think for at least 12 more months, 760px width will be ok for 90% users.

If site has enough content 100% is the way to go. We will still use 770px for sites that do not have much going on. In that case we often use some background images that show up in the large resolutions and they make the site seem as if it is taking full screen.
