Hmmm, some both drives are more than likely IDE and drivers are generic enough for windows, go for it....be trhe same as buying a new drive from the store and popping it in.

dvd burners and cd burners are extremely cheap these days, you can easily find a replacement for $20 or lower online, swap meet, or even at your local computer shop.

Sounds like the swap should work if you want to save a few bucks but as dspiel said drives are cheap these days and you could just spend $20 bucks and get one far better then the one you swaped.

Just remember when you swap them to match the jumper settings on the back of the drive. If both devices are on the same channel, one should be master and the other marked as slave.

I don't think the OP would need to worry about the jumper, they're replacing the current cd burner drive, not adding a second one.

If there are 2 drives in the computer, the the OP would have to worry about the jumper.

If he puts the jumper to cable select (CS) the system should recognize it just fine.

Right...but he still has to worry about the jumper..period ;)

With new OEM DVD Burners at $35 shipped, why bother?

Pay a few bucks and get a DVD Burner, yes you can burn CD's and DVD's.

Why would he leave a broken cd burner in? That's the point of this thread. He would replace the broken one with the new one, so there would only be one cd burner, and not have to worry about the jumper.
