Ok, so I want to grab a domain with the following whois info:
Registered through: GoDaddy.com, Inc. (http://www.godaddy.com)
Domain Name: xxxxxxxxxxxxx.ORG
Created on: 18-Aug-96
Expires on: 17-Aug-06
Last Updated on: 01-Aug-06
It's a .org, registered through GoDaddy, currently set to expire in a couple of weeks.
I have already contacted this person in the past re: buying the domain, but no luck.
What is my best shot at getting this domain? The GoDaddy backorder system? Or is there a better approach?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Chris

I herd Pool is ok for expiring domains although it will cost you $60 if successful.
The GD backorder system would be your best shot, if you know the current owner is going to let the domain drop. If it doesn't drop then you've pretty much wasted your $18.95 (although you can place a backorder on another domain with the "locked" funds).
Personally, I'd monitor the domain at expiry, and then check both whois and tdnam maybe every other day for approx 42 days. As soon as it appears at tdnam, then place an order at tdnam ($5/yr annual membership).
Don't be fooled if it's renewed. Often the registrars renew without receiving funds from the current registrant. If it's renewed, check to see if it resolves to a GoDaddy parking page, or if it resolves the the same website as now. If the former, it'll appear on tdnam, if the latter, you'll need to wait another year.

Personally, I think this is a more comprehensive and informative thread http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=477474 Read it all.

i think godaddy auctions off expired domains *BEFORE* they actually drop
They all do Bashar. SOP is to auction them off during GP/RGP.

Hello,
Unless you've spoken to the owner or know for a fact that they aren't going to renew it, it is more likely that it will be renewed. An organization who has had a domain for 10 years isn't likely to give it up out of the blue.
Once the domain has "expired," GoDaddy still allows a grace period for the organization to renew the name. Don't waste your money on backordering the domain until it has been a few weeks into the holding period.
Good luck.

I think more to the point would be I have already contacted this person in the past re: buying the domain, but no luck.
Kind of indicates the domain holder plans on keeping it. One of my domains was to expire the 1st of August. I renewed it Jult 31st so the fact that it shows unrenewed close to expirey is no quarantee.
The very first Item I checked on SnapCheck showed inaccurate expiry data. The 2nd too. I stopped checking after that. Both were not "borderline" cases.
