Hi Guys here!

I came across this company: http://www.protx.com/default.asp, they seem to have better deal them WorldPay. They do not charge initial setup fee, and provide the service to those who doesn’t have Bank merchant account as well.

I was wondering if any one based in the UK is using their service to process credit card online, if so could you please give a little comment?

Thanks in advance.

you have to get a merchant number from the bank, do they cost money?

Hi there

most UK banks charge an initial set up fee for a merchant account, and will also require you to have (typically) two years complete records of trading. They may ask for security, and typically wont allow you to have a cardholder not present (ie internet/phone) merchant account straight off. After that, they charge a set fee of a % of credit card transactions, and a fixed fee of XX pence per debit card transaction. They will also almost certainly require you to rent a POS terminal off them (one of those swipe your card things) and I think those are typically in the region of £20-£30 per month.

All in all - if you take a lot of money per month through cards (or believe you are likely to) - it does represent a very cheap way to do business, but if the volume is likely to be low, or you're a relatively new business it's probably going to be ruled out from the start. Banks are becoming more accommodating though - so it's worth asking the question. One more quick thing, quite a few banks now offer their own clearing process online - which may even undercut the service you mention above - worth checking to be sure....

tazd9t9 they seem to have an alternative solution for those without Bank merchant account!! Check out this text found in their home page:

-------------------------------------------------------
With protx vsp there are a number of e-payment solutions designed to meet the needs of internet merchants, large and small. Whether a merchant chooses for protx to handle the entire transaction including data protection or just the authorisation with the bank - we have the solution.
--------------------------------------------------------

I'll give them a phone call tomorrow to get more details; also getting merchant account is not as dificult as it use to be.

I enquired to Lloyds & TSB CARDNET service this morning and here are the basic requirements:

- SETUP FEE: £250
- CHARGES FOR INTERNATIONAL CARDS: 3.25%
- DEBIT CARDS: £0.40P/ transaction
- They should earn no less than £25/mo with all your transaction.

Recommended third party service:

Let's keep on digging :-)

what that paragraph means is they will deal with collecting the CC information on a secure server for you, or not - the choice is yours - but you're going to need a merchant account either way. Good luck with it! :)
