View Full Version : How to handle bulk mail sender?
torwill 08-01-2006, 06:09 AM Hello,
Just wondering how do hosters handle bulk mail senders? No, not SPAM senders, but legitimate newsletter senders.
I am using servers with Cpanel/WHM, when a user is sending newsletter (to thoudsands), Server Load is flashing red light in Service Status. spamd and exim is taking so much cpu resource, on a already busy server.
Do you set up another server just for bulk mail sending? (that's what I am thinking)
or what is a better way to handle bulk mail sending?
Thank you.

Having a dedicated SMTP server for sending the bulk is good, as well as setting up queue limits (like, say, 30 a minute or whatnot, whatever fits).
It does cause quite a load on servers that arn't set up for it, no? :D
torwill 08-01-2006, 06:51 AM from avg load 1, jump to 10, it does cause a heavy load. I put a sending limit of 600 mails per hour through WHM, maybe that's too much?

No, see, what you need, is to mandate your clients use software that throttles how fast they send the emails to the server. Limits at the server level are like putting a bandaid over a gunshot. It 'helps' but not really. :D
Edit: One popular package is 1-2-All from the guys at ActiveCampaign, though, the software didn't work in Firefox for us...
torwill 08-01-2006, 06:54 AM I get it! Thank you!!

Well if the bulk email sending is causing your server to redline on server load, then you don't really have much of a choice. If you want to maintain service for your other clients and not lose them, you'll need to move that bulk e-mail sender to another server or somehow limit the rate at which they send e-mails.
