"Private Dedicated Servers - AMD 950mhz, 256mb RAM, 40gb HD 7200rpm, 10/100 NIC, Plesk Unlimited License. 512mb ($5/month more), 1GB ($10/month more). 60GB ($5/month more), 80GB ($10/month more). INCLUDES 4 IP'S. 100GB/MONTH/TRANSFER. $300 setup fee, $50/month. Or NO SETUP FEE if paid for 1 year in advance (you save $300!). Full SSH access. We install REDHAT 7.2 and PLESK, YOU do the rest. We will do weekly backups"

What about a deal like this? I have no need for a dedicated server, but can a company offer this?

Can we get a link please? Seems like there's something wrong there. Possibly virtual servers? A 256mb ram upgrade for $5?

CyberWings is running a chat special.

http://www.cyberwings.com/hosting/chatsale.html

The chat is happening on irc.cyberings.com channel #cyberwings.

So, it's not reasonable?

Seems VERY suspicious to me. I wouldn't think anyone ccould offer prices so much lower than the average unless there's a trick.

It looked very low compared. It is your own box.

[19:55] * CEO-Shawn is 24 years old and privately funds Cyberwings. WE started in June 2001 with 0 customers and just me. We now have 13,500 websites in our family (growing at about 200 per day) and 7 full time staff. We are a privately held corporation. Never to go public and deal with politics!

Lifetime reseller accounts? 24 year old founder? I wonder if we have a new Shang on our hands :)

Cyberwings has a VERY strong policy on SPAM - immediate termination, no warnings, and no refunds. ALL accounts you have with us will be terminated if you send any SPAM from ANY account you have with us.

OH NO!!!! I could lose that $1/yr I paid. The horror.......

Since I don't have any idea of the real world costs of dedicated servers, can someone offer this and still make money off of it?

A server like that, without plesk would probably cost around $80-$100. I THINK you could get a plesk server for around $120, unless it's rackshack ;)

Yeah... right... 200 a day... so they will jump from 13,500 their first year to 73,000 with the next year? Give me a break.

Most of the above is host bashing at its finest.

I hope that it makes you competing webhosts, who I am sure are real unbiased, to feel real good with yourselves.

I started this post to see if the price was reasonable based on market standards. Also, to see if there is a profit margin in offering something like that. I didn't start it to host bash.

What I have learned in the 12 or so hours is that A) It's not the norm and B) There may be a slim profit margin.

In the world of hosting I have learned that you get what you pay for and your service expectations have to fall in line with them.

Definetely the best quote on this business. "You get what you pay for"

That was what I thought when I saw cyberwings prices...

It's been totally different to what I expected though

So different I now have about 7 or 8 accounts with them

30MB storage, 12GB/month (!!) transfer, unlimited POP3's, 2 MySQL DB's for $1 PER YEAR? WTF is up with that?

I have nothing against these guys, in fact I've never heard of them before tonight. But idiotic offerings like that make me want to sign up just to get the free bandwidth.

Even Cogent b/w costs 10 cents per GB. These guys appear to be on level3 and offer 12GB service at 8 cents per month. Taken to its obvious conclusion, you can get your bandwidth from Cyberwings for 7/10 of one cent per GB. A new industry low (pun intended).

Let's look at it another way. Before support, infrastructure, and any other costs are factored in, going on bandwidth alone: let's assume they've got bandwidth at 10 cents per GB. That means anyone on this plan who uses more than 800MB/month is a loser for Cyberwings. Let's go one step farther and assume (for lack of better info) they're on Level3 at 35cents/GB. That would mean anyone using 230MB/month is a loser for Cyberwings. Cynical? Absolutely not. Just reporting the facts. Say what you want, this won't last.

You do the math. All of you guys that are happy with them, I wish you the best. You get what .... ah, nevermind. Something tells me most of you don't care.

If I recall right, Cyberwings used to be active on WHT... A search might reveal some horror stories from the past - something in the line of new customers not being set up for weeks. At $1 I wonder why :cartman:

<Begin non host bashing comment>
Apparently the owner Shawn sets up each account himself. It is said he travels often and is not able to set up accounts very often because of this.

I got the above from another post either here or at FWS.net.
