Hi,
Work thru this book:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0201719347/qid=1023370605/sr=1-6/ref=sr_1_6/002-2857874-3396842
Don't just read it -- actually work thru the book, trying what the author talks about, while sitting in front of a Linux box (like RedHat 7.3).
Boot up into the KDE or GNOME Linux desktop, open up a terminal window and work thru the book!
Suggest using Pico (an editor) to make notes for future reference in a second terminal window.
Moreover, don't see how fast you can get thru the book -- see how much you can learn while working thru it. Plan on reading lots of "man" (i.e. online manual) pages.
Best wishes and take care,
Louis
