Boot up into the KDE or GNOME Linux desktop, open up a terminal window and work thru the book! Suggest using Pico (an editor) to make notes for future reference in a second terminal window. Moreover, don't see how fast you can get thru the book -- see how much you can learn while working thru it. Plan on reading lots of "man" (i.e. online manual) pages.
