I had a long beautiful thread that detailed my experience with http://www.racklocation.com

Well, here's my update. Everything has been going just fine. I've been very happy and my next project is to get a control panel on that baby.

Here is a link you can use to test the speed:

It's a 400K pic. :D

Oh no poof. It took 10 seconds to connect and then just over a minute for the picture to appear.... your main page and links were extremely fast, I couldn't even time it. Start, stop? Maybe 1 millisecond.

You mention they with DI? Doesn't DI have a problem with bandwidth connectivity? Or is it their support that's bad? Can't remember.

Dylan,

Yeah..you are correct.. Tabernack is fast.. is hosted with that company racklocation who is like partner with Dialtone Internet.

FYI Dialtone Internet is been great for most people I know, including me... The only complain was that they billed customers using 95% percentile (I never care) it seemed that 95% percentile hurt high spikes or high bandwidth servers, but they now bill on actual transfer too.

webfors

Yeah, DI is a great company. They only issue was the way the calculated bandwidth and to some extent the lack of progress on their control panel.

They now calc bandwidth by the average, so that is not an issue anymore.

DI did change they way they measure bandwidth but now they charge 5.00 per GB over your plan (use to be 3.00) if you do not purchase it in at least a 25 GB block... Even then, it is still 4.00 a GB.

Specs? Mine:

P2 400
256 Megs
9 GB scsi

Having said that there are 93 conncurrent users on the box as we speak :)

webfors

Hmmm, I don't have many users on that box, but at 7am how many users are really using it though :D

Dialtone's network is very fast. I have to admit though, that my server with UltraspeedUSA (vdi noc) is extremely fast as well.

Try http://webfors.com/ripwin/

DaveC,

You won by just a nose, is too close. Smart machine 256MB of memory and 9GB SCSI. Nice.

Yes it's fast and less than $240 a month :)

Thinking about upgrading my hardware with Dialtone soon. I will retain the small fast disks and memory but I may consider a larger Pentium processor.

I suspect Dialtone will be releasing a load of new 'specials' on Monday which usually consist of servers that people have moved off when they are upgrading.

Hopefully I'll get something even nicer in their 'sales' :)

yes, vdi's network is extremely fast. not sure if its as fast as di's but it's up there.

Note: this is not a dedicated server but a virtual account on a Dual P3 1Ghz with 1 GB RAM, which brings me to the conclusion that though a server could make a difference, in this case connectivity is what really matters.

How is racklocation.com? I might be thinkin of getting a dedicated server there too.....

Yep, the network definitely is a big factor, but you also have to take into consideration the load the server is under. BUT my little celery 533 with 64 megs of ram is pretty fast considering you're a big bully with your Dual P3 and 1 GIG of RAM and scsi drives. Yeah, racklocation are definitely on a FAST network.

Racklocation has been great. I haven't had any issues to complain about. I'm really looking forward to seeing the control panel their working.

We will expect more details on that of course :D

Webmin is pretty rough looking. And Plesk & Cpanel are really expensive if I want to use them for 10 domains of my own and 10 for others.

I for one did not appreciate an e-mail from racklocation.com yesterday, pointing to this thread and saying I should host with them, when I've said I've already found a host. That felt a bit too much like spam to me, and made this discussion appear to be just so much advertising for racklocation.com (sorry, Tabernack).

Hey!! :) Understandable Deb. I was just posting my experience and then a speed shootout started. :D

I can assure you that this thread is genuine and has no hidden agenda. I have only one server with them and another one in the VDI noc.

I wonder if the RackLocation.com prices will go up once they have established some customers?

So far, it seems they truly the next frontier in price/performance, so I really appreciate a thread about real linux 500mhz boxes for less than half the cost of last year's RAQ...

Hi Tabernack,

Well just this week i came across racklocation and i could not believe $50 for a dedicated server. I have out grown my current virtual account and will be starting my own webdesign & hosting business and this seems like the best option. I am happy to see all this positive info about them.

thanks

I think it also depends on where you are located. Here, I am closer to VDI.net so I can feel that VDI.net network is the fastest.

i'm thinking of getting a machine at racklocation. how good are the machines for webhosting of clients? webmin looks really cheesy imho. is it easy for me to setup accounts as well as easy for the client to handle their acconts? also, i heard racklocation is working on a cp..hows that coming along?

webfors
02-13-2001, 10:49 AM
Webmin doesn't offer any functionality for your clients. I'm sure their cp will take a few weeks to develop. I'm looking forward to seeing a demo myself!!

teck

i'll hold off until then. theres no point for me to get a box and not be able to host clients on it :(

Chicken
02-13-2001, 04:39 PM
You know, it isn't that you can't host clients on it, just that they won't have a nifty CP to play with. Means a bit more tech support for you until something is ready.

Chicken is right. You can host clients on it, it just means that your clients won't have a control panel to perform certain taks themselves. My first server was like that, and the truth is you learn much, much more by not using a control panel. I would recommend getting the server now and dive into the realm of the linux shell, then by the time their cp comes out you'll be a linux guru. :D

teck

i already know my way around linux, solaris, blah blah..but thats not the point. i want my customers to have access to a cp and never touch a shell.

See http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=5881 for some info on enabling Webmin to be used by clients.

It's not as pretty or simplified as other control panels, but it does offer useful functionality for clients. If you want to see a demo, send me an e-mail and I'll give you the login info. (I'll keep it available for a couple of days...)

Excellent, I'll have to look into that. It looks promising for a solution that doesn't cost anything.

Which site do you have hosted at racklocation?

Yeah but on that site he is using cpanel 3.6 when you look at the control panel that he offers for his web hosting so is that the correct site?

webfors.org is on racklocation. he just mirrored his page for the server on vdi.

It looks like RackLocation.com is no longer offering the $50/month server... The lowest price now is $100/month.

Arch
02-18-2001, 08:37 PM
Ah the old bait and switch :D

Makes sense since they were just starting. Too bad I missed it though :(

Rehan
02-18-2001, 08:53 PM
Actually, there's no 'bait-and-switch' involved. I don't think the $100 package changed at all...they just took away the lowest-end package and added one for $150/month. The $50/month package had a Celeron processor and just 64MB RAM.

Arch
02-18-2001, 09:20 PM
OK - just the old "bait" and then "take away the bait" then :D

Chicken
02-18-2001, 09:31 PM
Actually a 'bait and switch' works like this:

You advertise a low price on something and when the customer comes in, you, "Just sold the last one, but we have this (more expensive one), right here that you can take a look at..."

Car dealers often do this. They advertise ONE at a certain price which will be conveniently gone when you go to the dealship.

You may want to contact them about the 49.95 offer as they may still give it to you. They have a live chat on their site.
