View Full Version : Wired / Wireless Network

Hi all,

Trying to figure out how this will work (if it can). First let me lay out what I have right now:

PC1 - Internet gateway, dialup (yes, dialup, I know..)
PC2 - Other computer, connected to PC1 via Hub (wired)
LAPTOP1 - Soon to come.

So right now I have the pre-existing network between my two computers no biggy. Now when I get my laptop (Monday or Tuesday), I of course want to be able to not have to be in the area of my hub to get internet access (as slow as it is anyways :P) so I was wondering if there was a workable way to get like a wireless router to plug into the hub and be able to work off that. I really don't have the money right now to go buy two more adapters for the PC's as well, which is why I want to be able to (hopefully) have both networks working together and communicating with each other.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Daniel

A lot of domestic wireless routers have at least 2, but normally 4 Wired points coming out of the back.

For what you describe all you need is a wireless access point, not a router.

We use the Buffalo range when installing into people's houses, or small businesses. Very powerful and reliable.

Theres a large choice of routers available. I would shop around and find the best deal as they are all very much the same for home users.

Right but the OP can just get a router now and if he wants to upgrade to a broadband connection just hook it up to the router and not have to run out and buy a new device.

For cheap wireless routers, check out http://techbargains.com

Also you would want to turn off NAT on the router once it comes so your gateway will just act as the DHCP server and hand out the IPs.

Buffalo makes some awesome home networking gear.

Circuit City recently had the Buffalo WHR-G54S for $29.99 (http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=155054) after rebate, the rebate recently expired.
