I know many of you like Crucial but I have tried and they don't have the type I need. What would you pick out of these?

http://www.pagecomputers.com/cgi-bin/page/M0167389.html EDGE MEMORY - PERIPHERAL

And why does a CPU cost so much???? Is it even that speedy with 2MB cache?

Processor upgrade - 1 x Intel Pentium III Xeon 550 MHz - plug-in module - L2 2 MB

the cpu costs a lot for several reasons, they dont sell as many so it doesnt have the economy of scale that a p3 desktop has. also the whopping amount of cache makes the core considerably bigger, which means it takes up more real estate on a wafer, and more are rejected. that xeon is no shirker, the cache makes a real difference in some applications.

as for ram kingston.

We used to use Kingston and an other brand (I cannot remember the name) and had a few problems pop up. We switched over to Micron (Crucial) and all our problems went away. We have had no problems, what so ever :)

Out of the 3 manufaturers that you listed for memory, I would have to pick Kingston. I've used their memory in a couple of HP Netservers and haven't had any problems. I've also tried other cheaper brands and have ended up with a couple of bad sticks.

The Xeon CPU you are looking at is actually a kit that also includes a voltage regulator that is needed for the motherboard. Depending on exactly what MB is in your IBM server you may or may not be able to find it elsewhere. Since you may be stuck with having to buy the IBM kit they can stick you with a higher price. I ran into the same problem when looking for a second CPU for an HP Netserver.

These guys claim to have it for $680, but I would double check and make sure it's actually the kit that includes the CPU, heatsink, thermal sensor, and voltage regulator.

I personally like Micron memory but have heard good things about Kingston too.

I had about 10 bad Crucial 512MB PC133 ECC SDRAM sent to me in a batch of 20, which didn't make me too happy. I think you'll find problems with pretty much anyone, but I was really surprised because we normally have good luck with Crucial.

Personally I use Crucial for my memory as long as they have the type I need.

Crucial doesn't make the ram for this type of server. =/ That's why I have to go with Kingston or Edge. I found great prices on used Edge ram. Is it a very bad idea to mix brandnames in ram? I want to get some edge cause I am starting to be a penny pincher.
