Usenet.

It is how i started using the internet. Do you use usenet?

I am on a 28.8k modem Using usenet for binaries is rediculous. I have a server with a nice fast multi-homed connection.

Does anyone know how I would go about using my server for usenet purposes?

I am sure there are a ton uf usenet related ports out there, but rather than look for them myself, I'm asking here first hand. :)

THis topic didnt really fit in any other forum, so I was forced to post it here.

thanks for any helpful replies

Sure, I've been using usenet since the 80's... back when everybody accessed through a *nix shell. And yeah, you can still do it. You just need a usenet/nntp account somewhere (try a search engine query for "usenet account" or something) and then on your server run a newsreader program like tin (my preference in the old days, pre-ppp) or nn.

I'll look into it.

I broke down and visited the FreeBSD ports page. I found lots of good stuff there. I just need to figure out the one for me and get it running

Actually now that I think about you have another, possibly better option than the one I mentioned before. For your own server, you could get a full nntp feed and run your own news server. That way you'd get access to every group, and can set your own expiration policy. If it's just for your use, you wouldn't have to carry every group, so you could avoid the demand for a lot of disk space that normally comes with running a news server.

Would one be able to do this for free?
