View Full Version : Why did the board move?

I have seen that the board went from Ultraspeed (who I was never sure about... just looked too small) to Digination (NT, so I see why you left them) and now to WizardsHosting (who???)

Would one of the moderators be so kind as to tell the story of why you chose the host you did and why you left Ultraspeed. Since this is about web-hosting-talk (talk about webhosting) and since the moderators would seem to have more information by now about all the various hosts than any of us, I'm sure their decision was a very informed one and hence I would like to learn from it (especially why you guys decided not to stay with Ultraspeed)...

I didn't mean that as a jab,

I just haven't ever heard of WizardsHosting, so I thought it would be informative to hear why the hosting guru's chose WizardsHosting over, say, Catalog, Dialtone, Rackspace, or more significantly, over their former Ultraspeed.

today by Chicken should clear this up for you. This forum
is intended for the members to talk about web hosting.
It is not about the owner of the site/forum talking about
his web hosting choices. My opinion is that if the site
accepts free hosting services (as a forum admin. person
posted earlier), then ALL the members deserve to be
informed as soon as the site owner accepts an offer for
free services from a web host. I think that the site/forum
should accept paid advertising from web hosts who compete
with any host who is chosen to extend free hosting services
to this site. I am glad that I am allowed by the forum administrators to post my opinions, since they do not seem
to be well received.

The saga either is still here somewhere or is temporarily lost (and will return some day). The companies you mentioned either didn't submit an offer, or if they did it wasn't what Matt was looking for, or they aren't members. Carlos and the hosts that did give us offers are generous and active members of the forum and we went with one of our own.

There are many, many hosts out there, but I think it is good to go with one of the members of the board (and this goes for anyone looking for hosting). Support the local crowd!

The board moved so many times, because the owner, Matt, decided to move it.

Now that I just don't buy for a second. Most webmasters don't just decide to move their site for no reason. There must have been reasons...

The link at the bottom for Ultraspeed I took as an endorsement from WHT for Ultraspeed. Now that it is gone without any explaination, I am wondering if it was a mistake, or if Matt just decided to move because the site wasn't generating income to pay for Ultraspeed (which I thought was free... so the reason wasn't financial). Was the reason downtime? Or that the server was inadequate? Or that Ultraspeed was hard to deal with? Or just that Ultraspeed didn't wan to host WHT anymore so WHT had to find a new host?

When an offer is too good to pass up on, and it comes from someone you trust, do you jump at the offer or do you pass it? I know what I'd do. ;)

Carlos had offered Matt the opportunity to sit on a more powerful d-server (all by ourselves) with more than enough RAM and processor power to push on for a long time. I think we would have been pretty silly not to pass up the offer.

That said, we were happy with UltraSpeed's service and uptime (absolutely no complaints there); we were very happy with them in the time we were with them and Jordan and the crew should be commended.

Well, I read this forum because I really try NOT to jump at offers any more! My site has been on 3 hosts since 1997. Once I had to move 10 sites because the service had deteriorated from that which was initially provided, the other time because they failed to upgrade hardware to keep current.

In any case, thanks BC. That's a much better explanation than what kunal said (even though I don't know Matt, I figured he had to know what he was doing when hosting was concerned, rather than just being flippant about it...)

By d-server you mean dual cpu? I notice that SQL boards seem to require a lot of resources even from a dedicated server, in that the big ones tend to crash and lose posts a lot (well, once every few months is a lot to me)...

Arch,

I sympathise. When I began I jumped around so many web hosts because they were absolutely appalling. Arggggggggghhh!

And the answer is, yes : dual CPU. Carlos can fill you in on the exact specs when he has time :)

But about to be gunned down by me (yeah, I eam SHOT), this SOB was up 50 days before Saturday, then a Kernel upgrade screw it all up

We will be putting the Board on it's final home (Dual 800, 1 gig Ram in 2 weeks)

*lol* we talk that much huh?? :)
I look at this way (in repect to the other posts before this one). Sites grow... They end up bigger than they initially were planned to be and need more room to stretch in. Different hosts offer different plans and packages - one of the great things about the net - there's something for everyone. Looke to me like WHT has gotten itself into a setup that suits it, from someone Matt and the admin crew feel they can trust.

Last time I looked isn't that what we all look for? From all reports the companies that have hosted this forum in the past (except the NT solution) have been up to the task, at the time. WHT's growth had led to a need for bigger solutions. Remember back when this thing was pumping out 10gig a month at Hostmatters? Who know's how much it's doing now!!
