Hello,

We have a hosting server that is running on the Solaris
Sparc 7 platform. We want to be able to allow our users to
set up their own pop3's. I cannot find any software that will allow this. All the decent control panels seem to only be written for Linux. We have already invested alot of $$ in our Sun machine and we want to use it. Does anyone know of any control panel type software that has this feature (and anything more would be a bonus).

plesk at plesk.com runs on solaris I believe, its a very good control panel

very stable .. quite nice, until a few years ago it was the "must have" of ISP's and Hosts

then Linux came

Yep, go for plesk! It's very easy to setup and the only one I know of that runs on solaris.

Pleak version runs on Solaris Sparc 2.x platform. Sorry. I'd like to find one that runs on an 8.x version, so if you find anything, please post...

Damn, your right. Oh well, it's still compatible with more OS's then any other control panel I know.

That's all nice and all, but how come I have never seen a demo of sphera's wonderful control panel. Do you know where I can try it??

I should have mentioned this in my thread... I spent a long time on the phone with someone at Plesk and I am told that they are no longer supporting Solaris in any new versions. The guy told me that they did not sell one copy for Solaris in all of 2000. :-(

I looked at their website. It always worries me when I have to contact a sales rep for pricing. Anyone know how expensive it is? It must be pretty expensive since they don't even hint at it.

Anyone know of anything besides sphera?

That's too bad. I just finished installing Plesk again here at home, in a grand total of 10 minutes!!! I really love how easy that panel is to install. But it's not just a control panel, it installs and configures apache, proftp, bind, php4, mysql, qmail and more.


(getting back to topic) What about http://www.smarthostingtools.com Does it work on Solaris?

I don't trust any company that doesn't disclose their prices along with a functioning demo. You have no idea what your looking at! If it's really that great, well, let's see it :D

The Smart Hosting Controller does not run on Solaris. We are currently focusing on RedHat and FreeBSD first. Perhaps in 2-3 months we will release a Solaris version.

Yeah, no kidding eh? That's never a *good* sign eh? Heh heh. I think plesk dumping solaris isn't good. Sun just came out with that $995 server and plesk would be great on that. Pity... maybe they don't know about the new server. They will soon if not :)

Chicken I emailed them about that last night, were going to start carryiong that sun server and I emailed them to see if they can port plesk over to OS8 I will see what they say

So no one knows the pricing for Sphera's hosting director, AND no on has seen a demo of it??? So how do we know if it's any good or even affordable?

We've been on the scout for a control panel that will work on Solaris too since we saw the nice server that Sun are now doing.

We run multiple Solaris boxes in work. This is a corporate enviroment so control panels aren't really a priority. Anyways we for legal reasons moved from APACHE to Netscape Iplanet Websrver- which has an adequate control panel as default.

Are there any panels that provide source so we could try
porting? It may not be that hard... but I hate to spend a ton on money on software and then have to port it :-)

I called Sphera. It costs $400 per server with a minimum of 5 servers. They do not have a online demo. They will set up a 1 hr block of time to show you a demo via netmeeting. You cannot upgrade a current machine either, they say you need to setup a new machine and migrate all users to it.

Also you HAVE to purchase support which is an extra 10%/mo.

I was considering looking into sphera as a potential canidate for a future product we would offer. but the fact that their sales form does nto work properly and they do not return calls and they dont even offer a online demo, make me not want to ever do business with them.

Cpanel would have easily been ported to solaris (it could still be done in 2-4 days), but I simply can't justify shelling out for sun hardware without seeing a market for it.

Are you aware of the new 999.00 sun servers, one of the best deals out there, there would be a huge market for them, our company alone will start carrying tons of them if we can find a control panel

We too are looking forward to a good CP for Solaris as the new Sun machines are a bargain for what you get, as long as they follow the long line of Sun quality that is.
