Hi folks,
I have a Cisco 2924 xl en switch, and a server apparently connected to.
Shouldn't the switch show up on a traceroute?
How can I get it to show up on a traceroute.

Matt,
The switch will not show up on a traceroute. A layer 2 device should never appear on a traceroute, because traceroutes only show routing hops. The router views the connection from it to the desitnation server as a strait layer 2 (which it is).
Unfortunately, there is not a way to make the 2924 show up on the traceroute, because it is strictly layer 2 (not a multilayer switch). With a multilayer switch it is possible to make it appear on the traceroute but using the route processer as a router.

No, only end devices (PCs, Servers, routers) and such that have an IP interface will show. The switch is a layer 2 device (IP starts at layer 3) that only moves packets around.
If you want to get performance measures, you would have to connect to the management interface and poll (using SNMP) the MIBs for the statistics you wanted per port.

He is correct, if for some odd reason you want a small switch with Layer 3 abilities, I would go with the 2948L3 ....

Or you could get a Foundry or Extreme for a lot less with more features :)

You best not let Cisco hear you say that :D. While I certainly agree with you about Extreme, I have never been particularly fond of Foundry switches. I'm not sure what it is exactly -- maybe I don't like their CLI, or something -- but I'm not a big fan.
