View Full Version : Jeopardy-style support responses?

Does your host respond to your support questions in "jeopardy-style"? (Jeopardy-style is "top" posting and is frowned upon in newsgroups such as clpm). Is there a host that will not do that if you request it?

EXAMPLE of Jeopardy-Style:
Response: Perl is located at #!/usr/bin/perl
--Rob
VTI Tech Support
Your question: Where is perl?
--Don

EXAMPLE of non-Jeopardy-Style:
Your question: Where is perl?
--Don
Response: Perl is located at #!/usr/bin/perl
--Rob
VTI Tech Support

Also, is there a host that will keep the entire log from first question to resolution all intact in non-jeopardy style when replying, if asked?

I'm asking this because though more time-consuming, it would make it easier for the user, in my opinion.

why do people insist on having such a relationship with technical supprt that warrants 234234 replies. they're not penpals.

why not just phone the support line, and then <complain> if they answer in the form of a question.

Is it possible your host is using a ticketing system that does this automatically? That might be a little more difficult to change than replies sent via direct email.

The reason bottom posting is considered proper etiquette within mailing lists and newsgroups is that it makes it easier for others to follow the thread. Within a normal mail message top posting is perfectly acceptable because presumably you know the questions you asked in the original e-mail and no one else, again presumably, needs to follow along with the discussion.

Well, if it were up to me, that is, if I were a host, I'd set up a ticket system, and have a user preference of whether he/she wants jeopardy or non--jeopardy.

Just my opinion but I've always prefered the answer to questions to be on top. The internet scrolls up and down, and if the answer it right in front of me, with my own question below he fold, it makes it easier to see the required information - I don't feel I need to re-read my own question. I thank my memory for being able to fill that in :)

Good explanation, but is that really true, or did we all just get used to Outlook's default way of doing it?

If it's just one response, jeopardy responses aren't so bad. However, when the question wasn't answered correctly or understood, or if it is a difficult problem, and the emails going back and forth turn into 3 or more messages back and forth, it starts getting confusing with top responses in my opinion.

Personally, I prefer bottom replies, and would rather scroll down. It just makes it easier for me to follow and seems more organized.

One thing that really bugs me though is when a support response doesn't include the original question or deletes a relevant part of it. With numerous mails, sometimes it's hard for me to remember exactly what I asked them?

I like the idea of giving people a choice of top or bottom support responses. I don't know if their programs such as perldesk would allow for a different setup for different people, though.

From a host's point of view, with most people already in the habit of top responses, I guess it wouldn't be cost effective to change it for the few of us that might want it, though.
