Thanks for your reply. Erm.. what do you mean by fix? fix the software or hardware problem or what does it fix? ckpeter 06-04-2002, 09:03 AM Originally posted by cologroup Managed - We will Fix it for you Semi-Managed - We will fix it for money Non-Managed - We'll reboot it, if that doesn't work, call your mom :) Not quite true. The industry really doesn't have a concrete definition of "managed service". Generally it refers to helping you installing and configuring software, as well as dealing with any errors that may arise. However, this all depends on the provider, so you must ask to be sure. Semi-managed basically means that they will manage less for you, its like a small-size drink - you still have to figure out how much smaller it is. Peter dynamicnet 06-04-2002, 09:19 AM Greetings: In actuality, those terms are vague and the descriptions provided by ckpeter only true in rare instances. So it is best to question each case and ask a lot of questions to ensure what the words -- managed, semi-managed, and unmanaged means. Here's an article we just did in our May 2002 newsletter dealing with our experience over the past seven years: "Managed Services, Managed Hosting, Managed What? Our parent company has been providing Internet solutions since 1995, and We Manage Servers has been providing managed services since 1998. In those years I've come to find out that "managed services," "managed hosting," and the like have different meanings to different people. We've had some calls where to a customer managed services meant rotating backup tapes at a co- location facility. We continue to see Internet Data Centers (IDC) and hosting providers alike state they provide "managed hosting" and "managed services." They speak the truth. But sometimes this gets very much like the question of "is Darth Vader Luke Skywalker's father?" or "did Darth Vader kill Luke Skywalker's father?" (yes, I'm a Star War's fan). Most Internet Data Centers and hosting providers stating they provide "managed hosting" or "managed services" mean they will completely manage their network infrastructure and hardware. Very rarely does it mean they proactively provide server administration, database administration, and other forms of day-to-day requests and issues. They may provide something beyond "do you have a pulse?" monitoring, but very rarely do they react to monitoring alerts." == In ending, many companies that provided "dedicated servers" prior to 2001 just added "managed dedicated servers" to their offerings but changing nothing. Thank you. JKLIVIN 06-05-2002, 12:13 PM all companies will have different definitions of your 3 examples, just make sure you know what you are paying for before you sign the contract. if you are a linux/windoze expert you will probably be able to get an unmanaged server from most providers and never have a problem, but from your question, I would assume that you are looking for managed or semi-managed services from your hosting company. |
