I am a newbie to the whole webhosting scene, and I don't know how to go about webhosts. I'm 12, I just want a little domain and I don't need much space. I'm having a little problem finding a webhost and I've heard a lot of horrior stories. I found some webhosts and was thinking about these;

Hostculture -- Their plans seem very good, a little like Hostrocket. Hostculture seems like a good option. :)

E-starr -- They seem cheap, but look a little unprofessional.. they don't have Acceptable Use Policy or Terms of Service. Their sign-up page is a php e-mail form, I think. It seems a little.. insecure?

Cyberpixels -- Cyberpixels seems like another great webhost and they cater to a lot of teen/college domains.

Myacen -- Myacen seems very cheap, and their deals seem perfect too.

PhPwebhosting -- Seems very professional.. the unmetered traffic kind of scares me away, though.

Does anybody know what I should go with? Or suggestions? Please don't suggest Hosturbo, a lot of people suggested that on another board. I know all about their business and even if I didn't, their prices seem too good to be true. Sorry if this post sounds dumb, I know there's a lot of webhost owners around here and you're not used to seeing people like me around here. Sorry. Would just appreciate some help and I won't bug again. :)

I can't speak on the others, but I used phpwebhosting for quite a while and they were very reliable and decent enough with support. (not perfect, but not bad either)

When I signed up with them, one of the things I liked best was their honesty about being unmetered. Basically everything is unmetered as long as you use it within reason. BW is limited to 5 gigs or so, but they don't get on your back about it unless you're either WAY over the limit or are over it every month.

If you're looking for a simple small solution, you're not throwing money away by going with them, I can tell ya that. :)

If you are just starting out, try a free host like www.netfirms.com (I think they still have free service with domain name even)

This is the cheapest way to get familiar with hosting and how it all works.

If the hosts offer a money back guarantee (eg. 30 days), then why not just try one of them out and if you're not happy, make use of their money back guarantee.

Just an idea.

I'd avoid phpwebhosting like the plague. I've used them for 6 months and have found that their uptime is horrible. Yesterday the site was down 19 of 24 hours. Every week it seems that there are at least 10 hours (that I notice) that the site is down.
--just to be fair to them, they said they had a problem with their stats yesterday, so the site was probably not down the entire day, though there were some outages. I still stand by the claim that they are down 10 hours week though.--

skunksaredum,

I am sorry if I get rude here, but there is NO WAY that any of our servers was done for 19 hours yesterday (or any other day I can think of).

What server are you on? If anything, let me send you the MRTG output from that servers switch (yeah this can be faked I supposed but I don't know how else to prove otherwise).

The ONLY outage in the past week has been a small outage on each server as php was upgraded to 4.2.2 (which was done within HOURS of the intial 4.2.x exploit and 4.2.2 release being made). Yes, we did upgrade in the middle of the day and not at night but it only amounted in minutes of downtime for most servers and frankly when it comes to a possible exploit like this we will NOT wait to upgrade at night.

I think it may have been me who worked on your support request (I don't recall the username skunksaredum but I do recall this issue and saying that your logs might have had an error). I really have don't know what to say here - do you know how HUGE of an outage 19 hours would be? Seriously, 19 MINUTES would be a pretty big problem, let along 19 HOURS!

Let me know what we need to do to clarify this for you (and for anyone else reading this forum!).

Best Regards,

Greg

This wasn't in your list, but I'd choose hostradius.com. This is not an advertisement, It's a recommendation. Their plans are cheap, they have great support and the technicians are friendly. Check their site out if interested.
