I am seachung for a cheap "domain registry - basic hosting" combo, as I am developing a plan for starting web presence for small bussiness here in Mexico. I do not need great features, just a pop3 account, 3+ MB space (bannerless), and, above all, reliability.
So far, I have found the following that fits the bill:
www.registerfly.com
At $9.99 you cannot beat the price. It means registry at fair price and free 3 MB hosting. I even registered a domain with them. But once inside, the picture is not so nice:
1.- No ftp, just a web script to upload files one by one (ouch!)
2.- They force to use the "/images" dir as the only images place. If you have an already designed site, that means extra work.
3.- Ugly code added on source:

On the other hand, their support team answers questions, and you should not complain about so cheap package!
www.discountdomainregistry.com
This one intrigues me. For $15 they register the domain, and bundle a "free 20 MB web site and email accounts" (plus some other nice options). However, something does not feel very well. The website does not have any info about the "great free features" they offer (links to the same page), and some sales pitch are clearly wrong, such as "the cheapest domain registration of the world". All the links about hosting brings to www.successfulhosting.com where there is no info about the free package. I remember reading some time ago that the free site was hosted by another company (maybe even with banners?), but cannot find that info.
So, anyone has experiences with them?
www.ecalpemos.com
Looks like a good option. $20 registry includes a 10 MB bannerless hosting with ftp access. Only caveat: the email is a single "catch all" account (so, it is one account getting webmaster@domain.com or ihateyou@domain.com). They look fine, but I cannot find much info about them elsewhere.
Any experiences?
www.doteasy.com
This one is the best known. The domain is $18 ($90 for 5 years, but $45 / 2 and $25 / 1), and bundled is a 20 MB bannerless website, with up to 10 pop3 accounts. Looks like the server is fast, with ftp access and one user was very happy with it. On the other hand, they charge $35 to transfer your current domain with them, send you commercial emails, have slow support and have a funny 404 page for the domains hosted by them.
Opinions?
www.enom.com
At $30, and offering only 10 pages, they are not competitive with the other options.
Other "free" webspace with $35 registars (expensive, compared with the first three):
www.catalog.com (20 MB, 500 MB transfer)
www.artcliff.com (20 MB, "unlimited" transfer)
www.Freehostingweb.com
It is a $50 one time fee (including domain registy), and 25 MB of space with nice features: Free e-commerce shopping cart, control panel, SSL access, tutorials, support Real Audio, Real Video, C/C++, Python, PERL, CGI, XML, VRML, PHP4, MySQL
After first year, a $35 domain renewal is only cost. Looks fine for users requiring some of these features.
To the best of my knowledge, in all of this packages, the domain is owned by the user, just as any registration service. They only charge a little more for registration to offset the hosting price. Still, it looks a good deal, as the hosting is under $1 monthly (cheaper that any other hosting option). The only caveat: most have a bandwith limit of 500 MB or 1 Gb monthly (enough for most of my customers, though)
Of course, the value of the hosting depends of the speed and stability of the server. So, any experiences or comments about its services? They are cheap, but, are they reliable?
