Hi,

I would like to know how I can find out if a webhosting company is reselling and which reseller he uses. I come across alot of newbie hosting companies and I'm really curious which company they use to resell.

Most of the time I use domainwhitepages to check up the domain name, traceroute etc. But sometimes these companies have their own nameservers, so it's hard to look up which companie they use.

I also see alot of companies who are using the network of EveryOnes Internet...

Is it possible to check if the company is a reseller and if so, where do I have to check?

Thnx!

Why not just ask them? :)

Why does it matter whether they are reseller or not? If you can't afford a dedicated server, you'll be on shared space anyway.

I just want to know which reseller they use. I want to resell some space to a small local group of people so I'm very curious which company some of the webhosts use (so I can check if I can use them too)

On this forum, one name pops up often. MChost.

Seeing who a reseller is reselling for doesn't help anything because it doesn't say anything whether they are good or reputable. Especially if you want to be reseller, you want to find one that is good quality, not just based on price because you are accountable for your clients. You do not want to get sued by 20 clients while your host run off(or something like that).

Good luck in your search. :)

Luminance,

What type of hosting? If their DNS is misconfigured you might be able to trace them.

Yes, I know MChost pops up very often. They seem like a good company but on the other hand, I've seen many negative experiences of some of their costumers (and yes I know all hosts have pro's and con's)

Yea. Just make sure you go with one that has a lot of clients under them so that if something goes wrong (touchwood) you know there are people in the same boat so you won't have to be the only one applying the pressure. :)

you can do a few things to narrow it down....

www.internic.net to get the IP addresses ( or whatever whois server it brings up if they're not visable )

www.arin.net or www.ripe.net to get the block owner of the nameserver IP's

www.netcraft.com to see what the site is running and what other sites share the same IP address.....

i'm sure theres loads of other methods but these seem to be pretty accurate ;)

Isn't Everyone's Internet EV1? Doesn't EV1 run Rackshack? So I don't think that will help much... :(

You can kill two birds with one stone at www.samspade.org. Use the first form input ("Do Stuff").

Well, if their IP belongs to EV1 (EveryOnes Internet) then they are most likley using a rackshack.net server. That would mean that they don't resell using a reseller account.

If you are going to sign-up with a host who uses rackshack, make sure they are a stable company and they know what they are doing, (because there are a lot 'get rich quick' people who just purchase RS servers and sell accounts like crazy off them and they have no linux experience at all.) Be cautious...:)

Its true that the more clients a host has would obviously be akin to putting more pressure on the host in times of trouble, but think about this:

One of the biggest reasons why most hosts have problems is because they GROW TOO FAST and do not have a PROFIT GRAPH to match. Thats what happens to most of those hosts who offer too much for too little.

But when there is a major problem such as a major server problem, etc., they can't afford to rectify the problem effectively in the fastest possible time and then begin get a bad name. Some eventually are forced to fold up. Most of these who fold up simply disappear with your money, never to be heard of again. Some decent hosts do try their best to refund you your money or make alternative arrangements.

But nevertheless, most of these too much for too little hosts end up having big problems they simply cant *afford* to deal with effectively... sooner or later.

Look for hosts who appear to have a growth graph with a simultaneous healthy profit graph! The crux of the matter is... if they sell for too much for too little, fast growth should be best ignored. THE SAME INITIAL FAST GROWTH TODAY WILL BOG THEM DOWN TOMORROW.

I've see it happen so many times, I have developed a sensitive nose for such things now!

You're right. Some people make too little profit and serve too many clients so they are actual making a loss if they count the time and effort to be put in. However, this can happen whether they are a reseller or not. In my opinion, they've got no choice because the webhosting scene has become too competitive. Which is why I choose to do design where the reverse is happening. Too many crappy designers charging too much. :)
