View Full Version : Own domain with email
Werpon 06-03-2002, 10:39 AM I'd like to have an email account at my own domain. Do you know any reliable registrar that will give me a free account?
I've been reading about Stargate and Registerfly; both offer a free mail account. From what I've read, I shouldn't go with Registerfly. What about Stargate?
Finally, is it a better idea to register my domain with Godaddy or Directnic and pay the extra $10 or $20 for a POP account? Besides it's more expensive, Godaddy will place taglines in my messages, and I don't like it at all...
What would you do?
Thanks for your help...
complx.net 06-03-2002, 10:45 AM I'm not sure if this would be right for you, but in the past, before I actually ran a business, I used to handle my personal email from home. It's really not that difficult to setup.
If you don't want to do that I recommend finding a company on WHT that offers cheap email addresses and go with them.
Oh! Also, a friend of mine uses everyone.net (http://www.everyone.net) to offer his forum members free email. It's basically free webmail (only webmail) that has banner ads in it. No taglines I believe.... Maybe that will help. I personally tried it for myself and couldn't stand having no POP3 ;)
Werpon 06-03-2002, 10:59 AM I ran my own email server not so long ago, but it was only an experiment; I didn't find it reliable enough to receive important messages thru it.
I've found some good offers, such as mdit.net, but they're more expensive than Stargate, and I don't feel like paying more for the same service...
Everyone.net is no longer free, it costs $35 / year, so it didn't seem a good idea when I checked them.
I don't need POP / IMAP / SMTP, and I don't mind having a banner or two in my screen. The only thing I can't stand is taglines in my outgoing messages  ;)

yikes, i was unaware.
quite the ripoff then :)
Chicken 06-03-2002, 11:40 AM I'm not aware of registrars that provide free email accounts (forwarding yes, but not free accounts).
Well, maybe putting in a request in Related Offers and Request (http://webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=27) might turn up something that you'd like. From what you posted, you seem to want the domain and the email service to come in around $20-$30/yr. (if I'm reading this right, juding by the registrars you've mentioned, etc.)
It's not much but maybe someone would want the buiness and be willing to hook you up...

Stargate does provide a free POP / SMTP account; you can read it in their FAQ under "free email account".
Registerfly does, too. You can read more at http://registerfly.com/info/email.php
mdit.net provides this service for $13 / year, but I've never heard of them before, so I don't know if they'll be reliable (not trying to offend anyone).
bababooey 06-03-2002, 12:27 PM The best deal I have seen is with Flare Hosting. They offer a package for $20/year that includes domain name registration and one e-mail account. I was looking at this package a while back.
If you use them, please let me know how they are! Seems like a really good deal!
bababooey 06-03-2002, 12:29 PM BTW, their url (in case you couldn't figure it out) is
www.flarehosting.com
Werpon 06-03-2002, 02:22 PM That seems a good deal, but... they are still more expensive than Stargate...
I'll email them to ask if they put taglines in outgoing messages, retain property of the domain, or whatever...
lukask 06-11-2002, 07:26 PM You can of course also use the free DNS services of ZoneEdit or MyDomain to forward any email address AT yourdomain to any free or paid mailbox you want (see emailaddresses.com (http://emailaddresses.com) and
EmailDiscussions (http://emaildiscussions.com) for some good free email providers.
Also have a look at Free Email comparison (http://commonplace.net/email/mailcomp.html) and my own Short Guide to Free Email (http://commonplace.net/email) .

I thought about this, but I wouldn't be able to answer using my own domain...
Doug T 06-12-2002, 08:53 PM Check out gkg.net (http://gkg.net). I think they offer exactly what you're looking for. My experience with them has been all positive, and I've heard others say the same.

Checked them, but I couldn't find that email account anywhere... Could you please post a link? Thank you very much...
