They are expensive because expected sales volume is so low. If they have actually automated a back end registry they will have spend many hundreds of thousands of dollars to do so, and need to recover their costs - then make a profit...
There are a number of ccTLD domains that are at least as expensive - and many more that simply don't sell unless you can walk into their offices because it's all manual...
