I have heard a few things about efreeserver.com from the past, but I haven't seen anything about them recently.

I went to their site and I noticed that now they don't even require people long-term contract (it was 20 months before), and I didn't see cogent listed as their connection. I was wondering if anyone has any info on how they are doing, the type of support they give, and their connection.

Thanks,

Peter

and I didn't see cogent listed as their connectionWell, they never really listed Cogent. From what I have read in past posts is that they route incoming BW Level3 and all outgoing is Cogent.

On their support, not hearing about them here must be a good thing :)

Is it right for them to not list cogent?

I also remember from past posts that they use cogent, but I did see that on their network page. I was wondering if they dropped cogent.

They never have listed cogent, and they never acknowledge taht they use it, ask them about it(cogent) and they will ignore you. Best part is Jaque(sp?) said he would never touch cogent with a 20 foot pole, funny how things change when you notice the price difference...and still charge the customers the same old price..... Never really any problems thou, good uptime from my experience.

Cogents not really so bad but I hate hypocrites that say Cogent sucks and end up going with them. These are the same guys that make it hard to host on Cogent bandwidth. Actually hard for honest people that tell people they use Cogent.

Yup, I can count a handfull of places that show routes in over providerA but all data out is cogent. You cant tell until you have a box on the network to do traces out of. Not exactly honest if you ask me....

They had problems at the beginning. We run a DNS server on their network and I must say that their reliability has greatly improved because they did not have to give us credit for downtimes lately :D

If they deny they have cogentco.
Their not doing a very good job hiding it from the outside.

Heres a trace from a route-server on exodus.

They don't use Qwest anymore. They dropped it because "current bandwidth requirements did not justify a 3rd 100Mbps pipe" . Again, their connectivity is very good lately but changes to their terms and conditions did prevent us to colocate other servers with them.

We experienced a lost of packets last night to our sites at efree around 10:00 EST. Not sure how long the outage was we are looking at the logs for it. I don't believe the outage was very long.

What is important and what isn't.....

Most of my traces to and from Efree have been level3 and cogent and this was true even before they dropped Qwest. I see everyone getting upset about whether or not they use Cogent. Isn't the real issue one of whether they are multi-honed and whether they have alternatives if one of their suppliers was to fail? If so, then they appear to be a rather safe choice as they do have multiple carriers and they are located in a first class facility with Exchange in San Francisco which at last count had Cogent Communications, Global Metro Networks, Global Photon, Level 3, MCI/Worldcom, MFN, MFS, Pacific Bell/SBC, Qwest/Qwest Link, RCN, Sigma Networks, Telseon, Time Warner, Universal Access, Williams Communications and XO Communications as their carriers.

As to support, the company they were using for on-site support(can't guarantee they still do) is one of the finest I know.

Probably the reason we don't hear of them as often is that their server deal was at one time one of the best buys available with 400 GB Bandwidth for $399. Now, however, they are far above the low cost providers.

So would you recommend them?

Peter

I have never used them or talked directly to people who have, so I am in no position to recommend them. Just offering the information I know. As far as the data center they use in San Francisco, I would definitely recommend it.

Thanks anyway. Any comment coming from you is useful to know.

I have no complaints other then those I already stated. Their network is pretty solid and if its not they do give credit for downtime. I never have problems with my one server located with them so I cant speak for their support.
